Pros & Cons

Pros

Convenient! Love the convenience of these! I usually put out one together for our Easter study but this is nice having it all packaged together neatly and ready to go! The perfect pieces for each egg and I didn’t have to round the random items up. The kids love finding the eggs and it’s the perfect way to make it about Jesus! It even comes with a little booklet that gives conversation ideas over each egg. This will be a yearly tradition for our family.

Great Object Lesson. I like having the objects to help kids understand Passion Week. It is a great reminder of what happened to Jesus during those days and who were the others around Him.

Easter lesson. Love these and teaching little ones about Jesus

Eggs are great but materials relevant to the egg set don't actually match up!! The FamilyLife Resurrection Eggs are very nice, but I wish the book that comes with it had a hard cover - it's a small book that will likely be damaged with time and use, and I probably won't let kids play with it. More importantly though, I also purchased "The Story of the Resurrection Eggs Benjamin's Box" (ISBN 97803107155054 Zonderkidz 1997/updated 2008) as the book was clearly advertised and "designed" to be used with FamilyLife's Resurrection Eggs. I'm happy that I made that purchase because the soft-cover book that comes with the eggs is not story-like at all but rather instructional with an accurate color-coded page per egg. That said, although it's easier/nicer to use the story told in Benjamin's Box with younger kids, please/please/please note, Benjamin's Box does not/not tell the story in a way that matches up perfectly with the eggs, which presented a bit of a challenge when I read this to children for the first time (I had not reviewed the soft-cover book prior to reading Benjamin's Box - big mistake). I made it a game and we talked about what object we thought should actually be in each egg and also originally thought that maybe an object or two were missing as the objects nor the color of the eggs matched up exactly with Benjamin's Box. I later looked at the soft-cover book and found that the egg set was actually complete as per the egg product description - it just doesn't match Benjamin's Box. As Benjamin's Box is again advertised and states inside the book pg 7, "How to Use This Book, While Benjamin's Box can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story, it is designed to be used with FamilyLife's Resurrection Eggs" -- it would be nice if FamilyLife would again update either the book or the eggs so that these products actually correspond and work together. At a minimum, stop advertising that they go together - they really don't at this point. Comparison below for reference. Resurrection Eggs //// Benjamin's Book: 1. Blue egg, LITTLE DONKEY //// same 2. Light Pink egg, SILVER COINS //// same 3. Light Purple egg, CUP //// same 4. Orange egg, PRAYING HANDS //// same 5. Green egg, WHIP //// Green egg for THE LEATHER STRAP (confusing for kids as the objects don't look alike at all) 6. Yellow egg, ROOSTER //// (confusing here - there nothing anywhere in the book about the rooster, or the yellow egg at this point) 7. Light Orange egg, CROWN OF THORNS //// shows WHITE EGG with green writing for THE THORN 8. Light Green egg, NAILS IN THE CROSS //// shows YELLOW EGG with gold writing for THE NAIL (confusing as book shows three nails in a pile not a cross) 9. Purple egg, SPEAR //// shows a BLUE EGG and a PURPLE EGG for THE DIE & THE SPEAR (confusing as there are no die in the egg set and no third blue egg in the set, which would be needed here to match the book) 10. Light Blue egg, LINEN CLOTH //// shows a WHITE EGG with blue writing for THE CLOTH (confusing as kids are looking for the white egg here, which is actually empty in the egg set - kids originally thought an object was missing and had to open other eggs till they found the cloth) 11. Pink egg, STONE //// same 12. White egg, EMPTY //// shows a BLUE EGG with blue writing for HE IS RISEN! (very confusing for kids as they are looking for a blue egg and a DOVE as is pictured in the book; the book doesn't indicate in any way that the egg they find at this point should be empty - there is no DOVE in the egg set, but there is a CHICKEN in a yellow egg that makes no sense here but the kids tried to substitute the CHICKEN for the DOVE...) Overall, I'd still recommend the set, but you'll have to do some work in advance to make this work well if using the Benjamin's Box story! Otherwise, get ready to be creative while you're reading... and explain the chicken that magically makes it's appearance as the kids discover HE IS RISEN!

Functional but not high quality eggs and objects--book is useful. I have only just received this product, so we haven't tried it yet, and it may indeed help with teaching the Easter story. But, when I opened it, I was disappointed with how cheap it all looks. I understand that plastic eggs will be plastic eggs, but I guess I didn't realize that we would have a plastic crown of thorns, a plastic rooster, and plastic coins. This is worth about $10 with the book, in my opinion. For $20, I expected better--maybe metal or wood for the objects? I think when I'm trying to teach my kids about Easter, it's hard to know what to spend money on--and how much to spend. Clearly, I could have given $20 to help refugees, the homeless, or any other good cause. Instead I spent that $20 on this and was disappointed, but it's humbling to realize that my disappointment comes from the fact that I want things to look nice--when Jesus clearly doesn't care about the outsides of things, and when not much looked nice at all during Holy Week. So, I guess just consider where you want to spend your money during Lent and Easter. For some, this could be a useful set. For others, it will be a reminder that there are better ways to celebrate Lent and Easter--and perhaps do a bit of financial giving, that don't involve buying small pieces of plastic. Also, as others have noted, the eggs don't fit together well--they are hard to close, and one cracked immediately. I guess, to me, it would make more sense to buy twelve good-quality plastic eggs and put representational objects of your own finding/making within them. It would be easy enough to draw these objects on paper if no better idea presented itself. UPDATE: I added one star because, actually, my kids love this, and I wrote the review before reading the book to them. The kids asked me to read the full book two days in a row. The Bible verses and stories that go with the objects are quite helpful, though the book is a small paperback without a strong cover and could be easy to lose or rip. I did have a quibble with the illustrations: for the first half of the book, all the bad guys (Judas, the soldiers) had tightly curled black hair and darker skin tones, which made me uncomfortable. This was unfortunate illustration. However, by the end of the book Joseph of Arimathea and the angel also had dark tightly curled hair and darker skin tones.

Well made, interactive, Biblically accurate. This is such a great way to interact with the Easter story. It's for kids of all ages. Mine are 9 & 11 and really enjoy this. Everything about this is great quality. The eggs are thick and sturdy, but still easy enough for small hands to open. All of the little pieces inside the eggs are well made and it's easy to tell what they are. The book tells you which eggs to open in what order, gives the Bible passage references that goes with that part of the story and has a kid friendly summary. The summaries are for small kids (3-6ish) so we just looked up the verses and read the Bible story itself, which was a great modification for older kids. This really started a lot of important meaningful discussion as a family and gave us a way to walk thru the Easter week together without it being just reading the Bible or us talking at the kids. It's good enough quality that you can put it away and use it every year. My 9 year has already said next year she wants to be in charge of us doing this as a family, which is awesome!

Cons

Eggs are flimsy. The concept is adorable and I love teaching my children about it. The book is nice a little hard to follow a little off when you go biblically. But if you pair it with your own Bible it's perfect. The little trinkets inside the eggs are so cute and very sturdy I may add. Unlike the eggs they are flimsy and they don't go back together well and unfortunately the colors are not very nice it says like pink but it kind of looks like a purple it says purple but it kind of looks like a pink I just don't like the coloring I think I'll try to get more sturdy and colorful eggs and just keep the trinkets. I really wish I could just buy the trinkets and create my own. And if your questioning it does not exactly line up with the Benjamin's box. There's a rooster in this set but there's no rooster in Benjamin's box. Also he picks up different things there's a whole donkey probably cuz you can't do donkey hair. The spear does not have dice or a small rock although there is a rock for when the rock was rolled away from the tomb. All in all I do recommend buying these I just wish they were more cost efficient.

Not "open and go"---but here's how to fix it! Here's how to make it better: Open it, check that the eggs close. Four of the eggs didn't close and I replaced them with others that I had. I want the items to be a surprise, so I'm not going to use the stickers. I'm not going to use the booklet... too short of scripture, and it gives away what's in the eggs. I want to actually read my kids (ages 5 and 7) a chapter ish of scripture each day, not just a one verse snippet. So here's the bible verses (that I spent two hours to put together) to use for eight days leading up to easter. Feel free to use them as well. It's worth working hard to teach our kids the most important story in history. Day 1–Blue Egg (Donkey). Matthew 21:1-11 or Luke 19:28-40 or Mark 11:1-11, the Triumphal Entry Day 2–Pink Egg (Coins). Matthew 26:1-16 or Mark 14:1-11 includes Jesus anointed, Judas to betray Jesus Day 3–Light Purple (Cup). Mark 14:12-31. Includes passover with disciples, institution of Lord’s supper, Jesus foretells Peter’s denial. John 13:1-20 Jesus washes disciples feet Day 4–Orange (Praying hands). Choose excerpts from John 14-17, high priestly prayer. Then John 18:1-14 Includes Gethsemane, betrayal and arrest of Jesus. Day 5–Yellow (Rooster). Luke 22:54- 23:25 Peter denies Jesus 3x and weeps, Jesus before Pilate and Herod, Barabbas released Day 6– Green (Whip) and Orange (Thorns) and Light Green (Cross). Jesus crucified and Luke 23:26-49, Simon carries cross, conversation with thieves, curtain torn, Jesus dies. John 19:23-27, cast lots and Jesus cares for his mother. Matthew 27:45-56, Jesus cries out, tombs opened, earthquake. Day 6–Good Friday. Dark Purple (Spear) and Light Blue (Linen Cloth) and Dark Pink (Stone) John 19:31-37, Jesus’ body pierced. Luke 23:50-56 Jesus buried by Joseph of Arimathea. Matthew 27:62-66, stone rolled in front of tomb and guarded with soldiers Day 7– (No egg for a day, waiting, like disciples did) Day 8–Resurrection Sunday. Dark Pink (Stone) and White (Empty) Matthew 28: 1-15, Angels appear to Mary at the tomb, Jews bribe soldiers. John 20:1-31, Mary sees tomb, Jesus appears to disciples and Thomas, ends with verse 31… “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Day 9– after Resurrection Sunday. Review all eggs/retell story. John 21:1-19, breakfast with Jesus, Peter reinstated. Matthew 28:16- 20, Great commission. Acts 1:6-11, Ascension.

Great eggs, terrible book. The resurrection eggs themselves are great - both in concept and execution. My four-year-old daughter loves them, and it is a wonderful way to teach her the Easter story. Five stars for the egg. However, the book you use with the eggs is terrible and only deserves one star. First, physical dimensions. The book is about a quarter inch too long to fit in the box with the eggs. This means you'll have to store it separately and possibly lose the book (which might actually be a good thing). More importantly, the book is filled with false statements, speculation, and sectarian theology. For example: "the Bible tells us that Jesus was stronger than any man." No, it doesn't. In another part, it talks about the God part of Jesus and the human part, contrary to the orthodox view that Jesus was both fully God and fully man. For the last supper, it presents a memorialist view - Jesus didn't really mean it when he said 'this is my blood,' he only meant it as a symbol. This may be fine for some parents , but it is in conflict with what we teach our children. My advice: buy the eggs, and use them to tell the Easter story to your children, but throw away the book and tell the story yourself.

Don’t love the price. Love this idea, but pretty pricey for the quality.

Broken. One egg came broken but the rest were fine. Low stars because of that. The story and idea are great though

Product Came Damaged. Love the product and the story but when i received it, the egg carton latches were broken. all the pieces for the story and the story book were included just the carton to hold the eggs was broken. I read previous reviews about items being damaged or missing and ultimatley thats why i decided to keep my set. I didnt want to take my chances on returning it and the replacement have a fixed egg carton but missing the story book or parts like some other reviewers have stated. Honestly, its worth the risk of ordering and seeing what you get but you can totally make your own easter egg story eggs too im sure for about the same cost
