Pros & Cons

Pros

Really Very Decent Security Camera for the Price. The Amcrest ASH22-W camera has a relatively economical price yet has a lot of features listed under its specs, so I was excited to give it a try. Packaging is typical – packed well in cardboard forms and foam padding with all items in their own little baggies, the lens on the camera is protected with a plastic film, and one piece of sealing tape is all that is needed to open the box. The box lists the title and a few features and looks very well-printed, with photos of the camera and other promo stuff printed on it. Included is the camera, a paper template for drilling mounting holes, the USB cable and power blister, mounting screws and anchors, a quick start guide, warranty info (you receive a full one year warranty with this device), some WiFi compliance info, data on cloud storage and the Amcrest user community, a firmware and FCC regulatory info guide, and a manual. The manual is a simple piece of slick folded-up paper and covers the basics. Like so many things you don’t need much of a manual as everything is done through the app and help is available online in the app if needed. You probably won’t need it – it is a breeze to set up; whether using WiFi or wired networking. The camera is a fairly standard normal-looking security camera with two antennas, an indicator light (which can be turned off in the app), a built-in microphone, a swiveling mount – it’s very recognizable as a security camera which can be important in itself; to scare away burglars and others. It seems very well-sealed against the elements, and the cable; which exits the camera through the mount, is sealed as far up into the device in the back as I can see so the mount itself does not need to be weather-sealed to protect the integrity of the cables and electronics inside the camera. There are three mounting holes, and the included screws work just fine with a Phillips head screwdriver and maybe some pre-drilling. Anchors are included but I did not use them and they are more for indoor use. The mount is very secure, of a nice thick plastic with substantial holes for the screws. The cable is a bit thick as it holds both the power and the network pigtail and is heavy-duty, it splits at the end into the power plug as well as a network cable plug, and the junctions are well-sealed with thick joints. The mount has a slot for the cable to worm it’s way out so you can either hide the hole the cable is going through by drilling a hole in the center of where the mount will go, to snake it out the side and down into another hole as needed (like you see in my pic). The length of the cable before it splits into the two pigtails is short but plenty long enough to reach any normal distance to an accompanying hole or access that you would need, I think. Unfortunately, the network end and power plug end are not detachable from the rest of the cable so if you need to drill a hole it does have to be the diameter of the network end part, even if you don’t use that part. The camera mount gimbals easily at any regular normal angle that you would need and once you get it right the gimballed part tightens for a secure lock. The camera housing is IP67 – which means it is VERY weatherproof and wind-proof. Weight is about half-pound or so and size is 5.8 x 2.9 x 2.9 inches. There are two WiFi antennas that can be repositioned as needed, and as mentioned above the camera can be gimbaled in any direction or orientation. Once you plug the power cable pigtail into the power cable and in turn plug this into the USB blister transformer it should start booting up. Setting up is very slick, well-polished, and in many ways similar to other things like this. It’s easy enough for almost anyone to do, of any technical knowledge (or lack thereof). Set up is done via the app, for mobile devices. As I said – it’s simple; you install the app through your app store, open it and register an Amcrest account, check your email and enter the verification code that you were sent, log in and then go in and add your device – scan its QR code in the app or enter it’s serial number manually. Then follow along with the directions in the app, which is a fairly short process. To connect this camera to your network you can either use WiFi or connect the camera directly to a network cable. Whether you use WiFi or connect a network cable you do have to plug the camera into a power source, a USB cable and transformer blister are included as I mentioned. For WiFi you are asked to connect your mobile device to the camera’s temporary WiFi network, and follow the instructions in the app to continue, finding your own Wi-Fi network and entering its password. Once that’s done you are all set. With the Wi-Fi setup it worked okay for me, considering the distance the camera is from the house. It was fine but even with the two antennas it was a bit far to reach across a long yard, through a car, and then through two feet of the solid limestone that the old section of our house is made up of. For normal situations I think the WiFi is just fine – having tested it with a router I had in the garage where this is installed. BTW, the camera only uses 2.4 GHz WiFi and does not have 5 GHz capability. For connecting directly to your network via a standard network cable you pick that option in the Amcrest SmartHome app and follow the directions there, the process of which is even easier than WiFi – though of course you have to plug your network cable into the camera. Video signal is via dual H.265 / H.264 and WiFi uses standard AES/WPA2 encryption that most of us have on our WiFi networks. The network cable can be plugged directly into the pigtail but there is a whole waterproofed clamping section, it can be a little complicated but with a little common sense it can be worked out. There is a foam seal and a part that screws onto the camera’s pigtail to make everything relatively waterproof. Once done you have a nice water-resistant network cable junction in the pigtail leading to where ever your network cable goes. So as I mentioned above I am using the network cable instead of WiFi, which was an easy matter as I already had a router set up and configured as an access point and this was right inside a short distance from where the camera is mounted. If you set the camera up on WiFi and then decided to use the wired network connection instead the camera seems to have to be deleted from the app to do this, and you just need to add the device again with this time selecting the wired solution. I did a hard reset of the device itself using the little reset button on the bottom of the camera (which extends through the waterproof hatch that contains the SD card), though I tried this again and didn’t need to do a full reset, just a soft reset. Setting it up again is about the same procedure but you pick ethernet instead of the Wi-Fi and you don’t need to go through the whole password and connecting to the camera etc, as I mentioned above. I really liked the easy setup and as I mentioned the setup is slick and smooth, and very similar to other security cams. All options are simple to access via the gear icon for the device – like sensitivity, human detection, and zones. The sensitivity is indeed very sensitive so I had to crank the sensitivity down significantly. And human detection worked amazingly well. Setting up zones is easy – these are zones where you want motion detection thus eliminating other zones where you do not. Pretty standard stuff for surveillance/security cameras. Notifications work nicely in the app, allowing you to quickly view the video of the notification period as well as quick access to real-time video via the stored video on the SD card. Various other options are available in the app – like the ability to reboot the camera, do firmware updates, share the device with others, adjust video quality, notifications, turning the indicator light on and off, and more. You can also set up a continuous recording schedule in addition to the motion detection saves, which I have set up to save to the SD card. You can use an SD card up to 256 GB and Class 10 or higher is recommended. The SD card physically is accessed via a small door on the bottom of the camera, secured with two small screws inside the waterproof hatch. The hatch also contains the reset switch, which protrudes through a hole. You can also get cloud recording from Amcrest. You can access previously saved motion detection video or recorded video on the SD card, through the desktop software DVR, or through the cloud service right through the app, from where ever you are. Video quality is fine, it’s not extraordinary but it is in HD and of moderate quality. In addition to day recording the night vision works particularly well also, the IR LEDs reach around 98 feet or so and consist of two LEDs. I’m really impressed with the night vision. I can even see night bugs flying back and forth in front of the camera lens. The camera itself has a 2.8 mm lens with 102 degrees of view, which is pretty wide, and is an HD 2-MP lens with a resolution maximum of 1920×1080 at 30fps, you can also use 720P. This allows a certain amount of digital zoom and such. Operating temperature is around -20 degrees below zero and 140 above – so direct sunlight shouldn’t bother it and local winters here in Northern New York won’t affect the electronics. There is a built-in microphone that lets you listen to what is going on at the camera. In my experience, this worked well and I was able to hear even fairly low-volume things going on nearby, though passing vehicles were super-loud. There is no speaker. You can also use this camera with smart home devices. So in summation; the Amcrest Security Camera Model ASH22-W works beautifully, though the camera quality itself could be a bit better. But the co-star here is the app and the functionality of everything working together seamlessly and trouble-free, and easily. It just works nicely – both the setup and the use of it. If you were asking how good can a security camera costing $50 (as of April 2021) be – in my opinion quite good and definitely worth the price, if it is an Amcrest Security Camera Model ASH22-W at least.

A quality camera. I was looking to replace my 8 year old D-Link cameras and found these Amcrest cameras met all my requirements. I bought one to see if I liked them. Picture quality is amazing and night vision is just as good. Wide angle lens gives me a much broader field of vision than my old cameras (which had a very narrow filed of vision) that allowed me to cut the amount of cameras from 10 down to 5. Since I already had network cable going to my D-Link cameras I didn't need to use the Wi-Fi, but, I set one up using Wi-Fi just to see how easy it was. No problems at all and then I reset the camera using my existing cable. The cameras are easy to set up, but it doesn't hurt have some networking knowledge if you want to use different ports on your router for security reasons. I use Blue Iris software and the Amcrest cameras are supported, but the Amcrest software, Surveillance Pro, is pretty doggone good and it's free. I currently have 4 of these cameras and plan to add at least 2 more. One more thing, I had a question about using more than one device to view the cameras so I contacted Amcrest support and got a quick response with an answer why I can't use more than one device to view my cameras, which I now understand why. Highly recommend these cameras. Sometimes it's the little things in technology that makes a difference. In this case it's the pigtail from the camera that includes a weather proof network connection.

Great camera. Works on View Pro and Surveillance Pro too. ASH22W Camera install was very easy. You just have to install it on the Amcrest Smart Home app first, then you can add it in the Amcrest View Pro phone app and Amcrest Surveillance Pro program on the PC. Just make sure the camera is on the same network as the phone/device you are using when installing. Camera itself is very clear and covers a nice wide angle. The night vision coverage looks much more even than my older Amcrest cameras. The same cam settings are available as with my other Amcrest cams and I can still access recordings on this new ASH22's SD card via the Surveillance Pro playback tab on my PC, same as before. So far so good. I'm just happy this new camera still integrates with the Amcrest Surveillance Pro program on my PC, since that is my main interface.

Good wireless camera specs for the price; surprisingly easy to setup. Normally, I would recommend only getting Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras because they support the highest resolution and they don’t saturate the WiFi network. However, I needed a camera to place in a relative’s barn and I was not about to burry Ethernet cable for it. The specs on this wireless camera are good for the price. The 1080p resolution is on the higher end for wireless cameras these days. 30fps is a must have because moving object are simply too blurry otherwise. The night vision is pretty good as well. This is my second camera with a build in microphone and while it’s not recording studio quality, it is actually pretty good and provides the ability to listen and see what is going on. This camera is part of the “Smart Home” Amcrest line. It is much easier to setup then the standard IP cameras, and is setup similarly to how those Doorbell cameras are setup. Open an app on the phone, scan QR code, connect to the camera’s hotspot, set password, and you are done. The app is easy to use and I don't anticipate any issues teaching my less tech-savy relatives how to use it. Through the app, you can live stream video or play back saved events from anywhere with an internet connection. You set the motion detection zones and the sensitivity, and the camera will alert your phone instantly when an event occurs. You can record just events or continuously to the camera’s SD card, the cloud, or an NVR. The SD card is probably the easiest way to record and will likely meet the needs of most people. I added some photos prior to installing it in its final destination so you get an idea of the picture quality during the day and at night. Good luck with your home surveillance projects!

Amcrest ASH22-W is a winner. The media could not be loaded. I've been a big fan of Amcrest cameras for quite some time now. So when I went looking for a camera to add to my garage, Amcrest was my first choice. I decided on the ASH22-W. And as is normal with Amcrest, I have not been disappointed. This is a weatherproof outdoor camera, but I did decide to mount it inside the garage, with a perfect view of inside and just outside. Setup through the Amcrest Smart Home phone app was a breeze. The wide angle view and 1080P resolution look great. One of the features that really caught my attention was the Human Detection. Since I now get package delivery inside my garage, it's nice to be able to get an alert when the door opens and someone steps in. The motion detection sends my phone an alert and will let me know if it has detected a human. And it's not just for the expected visitors. What a great feature for when possibly an unexpected person arrives. I chose the WiFi network option, but you can also run an ethernet cable to the camera, if you choose. This particular model doesn't do POE (power over ethernet), so keep in mind, if you run ethernet cabling to the camera, you will still need to provide A/C power. As with other Amcrest cameras, you have the option of micro SD storage and/or cloud storage for your video and snapshot storage. The Smart Home app does a great job of organizing your records by date and time, so you can easily go back and review events that have occurred. You can even setup a continuous recording schedule, if you choose. The night vision is phenomenal and makes the garage appear to be totally lighted. There's also an onboard microphone allowing you to listen in to whatever might be going on. The ASH22-W was the perfect addition to my other Amcrest cameras. Thanks to Amcrest, I have a great security setup with no monthly fees!

Much improved WiFi connectivity. I've been using wireless IP cameras from Amcrest since 2015. Their older models suffered from significant WiFi connectivity issues that made the cameras unreliable, especially if there was a wall between the camera and the nearest WiFi AP, which is true for pretty much all outdoor cameras. Even though my site survey showed a strong signal at the locations where these cameras were installed (I am running an Orbi system with several satellites throughout my home), they still struggled to stay connected. I've been able to work around this drawback by connecting the camera's Ethernet port to a dedicated WiFi bridge or one of the LAN ports on my Orbi satellites. This of course negates their usefulness as WiFi cameras. Having said that, I was very pleasantly surprised by how well this newer model (ASH22-W) stays connected to my home WiFi and how little latency is present in the live stream! Even in my attic the camera has a solid connection. I was so impressed actually, that I purchased a few more to replace some of my older models. I really hope that Amcrest continues this improvement with future models (Amcrest, please take note.) I also love that this camera supports a large 256GB MicroSD card and continuous recording (I highly recommend you use a high endurance MicroSD card for this purpose). Its dependency on the Cloud was disappointing, but I knew this going in and it seems unavoidable with Amcrest nowadays, as this appears to be the direction they are going for all new outdoor cameras. At least once the camera has been added to my Amcrest NVR, I can still record/view its RTSP stream locally, even during a Cloud outage. Adding the camera to my Amcrest account using their Smart Home iOS app was a breeze, so kudos for this improvement over previous models. Once added, it was trivial to add the camera to my Amcrest NVR. This newer model has a plastic casing, which some may consider a step down from previous models, which had metal casings. However, the build quality still feels solid and I do like the smaller overall footprint and lighter weight. This model allows for tool-free adjustment of its rotation/angle and still feels very snug. This is preferred in some cases where one had to use a 90° screw driver in tight corners. The microphone provides clear audio and is a nice addition, as many of their older outdoor cameras did not include this feature. Sure, a speaker for two-way audio could be nice, but not that useful for my purposes. The nighttime vision is comparable to their older outdoor models, which is say it's very good. I do wish this model had a sun visor like their older models, but so far it hasn't been a major issue when the camera is in direct sunlight. The daytime video quality is very good and the 1080p resolution is very clear. Overall, I am very pleased with this camera! It offers a lot of features for the dollar, which makes it a solid value. I may give their 2K (4MP) model a try to see if it is just as good. But this model is a solid winner in my book, despite its dependency on their Cloud.

Cons

Works with Blue Iris! However...... This is an interesting problem here. The camera does work just fine. Its got a good picture. Its weatherproof. Its a short body with a wideish field of view, and works with Blue Iris so it met my wants as far as that. However..... I am not sure I would buy another. Yes, you can use Blue Iris. But No, you cannot shut off the cameras internet access! So as far as I can tell its constantly streaming your footage to Amcrests servers with no way to stop it! Most IP cameras with RTSP, and every camera I've ever bough until now, allow you to use a browser interface to get in and adjust things like IP address, remove watermarks, shut off remote access etc. Not this one! You can use the Amcrest Config Tool to do a few minor things but any attempts to get in to a real interface with a browser fail. Now if you are using Blue Iris it's probably because you don't want your cameras exposed to the internet and you shut off DDNS, PnP and any other security problems right away. Not possible with this camera. Yes, you could block its IP address (which you cant change from the Config tool) at your own firewall but then it just hammers away on the firewall thinking its got a bad connection and needs to try again. I'm going to keep it because it does seem like a good camera and maybe I can figure out some workarounds. But if you are like me and search the reviews for Blue Iris because you don't want your cameras exposed to the web, keep looking.

Can't set it up without a smart phone. Q: Can this camera be accessed through its own built in web server? Or just with the app? A: This camera model is a cloud-based solution and does not have its web UI. All setting changes must be done through the Amcrest Smarthome App. I don't want your app or a cloud based solution. My cameras are blocked from the internet on purpose. This one is being returned.

Great cameras/ poor customer support. Had a problem with the micro SD not sitting properly and did return the camera. The other problem I had was their tech support who never respond to the other problems reference this camera and the other 14 Amcrest cameras I purchased . You would think they would want to help a good buying customer like me but it’s not the case, you get a lot of lip service and no action. They do make excellent cameras but hope you never need their tech support because your on your own.

Requires apps to use! This is unlike any of the other Amcrest cameras I have purchased, in that it requires at least one app to use, and possibly more. Just to configure the device demanded that I install "Amcrest Home App" or something like that. That's a full-stop failure right there. Cameras need to have webservers for configuration; I refuse to install software that will cease being updated or will not work at all in a few years or OS upgrades from now, and which probably send all sorts of data back to some company or nation with whom I would rather not share data. Fail. Returning. I suspect even if I was willing to configure it with this software that this camera integrating with anything other than an "approved" camera server would not work, so this indicates I should start looking at vendors other than Amcrest in the future if this is the direction they're pursuing.

Wouldn't recomend this camera. I bought this camera for my dad. I have 13 other amcrest camera and they are great. The interface is a pain but it can be accessed from an IP address. This one you can't. You have to use their confusing software to config the camera. The font on the software is soooooo small I can't read it. I use blue iris for it (way better program then theirs), they demand you use their software swear it's better. It's not. Blue iris runs circles around theres and I CAN READ THE TXT in blue iris. Their Support can be rude at times. I still can't get their overlay text off the CAMERA because your FONT IS TO SMALL!!! You support is the worse. They are rude and get upset if you can't hear them due to a bad connection.

BEWARE OF THE ASH! ASH as in Amcrest Smart Home. The good: it is a decent, solid camera and a great price. If you are a new webcam user and dont mind giving private information to the app, this camera is for you. Read no further. Returning Amcrest buyers: BEWARE! There is no User Interface for the camera. No PC access except…. Well i found a way to change TCP/UDP/Port settings with a PC and not with Blue Iris either. I sent it back cause i like having the web UI. I do not like giving over control to an app. I am not putting my wifi password in there. Or any other info that may allow someone to get in my network. Returning buyers avoid ASH products if you want a WebUI. Amcrest is still a great brand and rrcommend it to anyone but ASH doesnt work for me.
