Pros & Cons

Pros

Best monitor I've used in years. I'm a 10 year animation veteran, and I've worked for multiple animation studios. Cintiq displays are standard issue. However, working at home on freelance, I've never had the luxury of spending thousands of dollars on a cintiq and have always resorted to these non Wacom brands for my own personal work. It wouldn't be fair to compare this with Wacom's massive 32 inch behemoth, but with regards to their 24 inch, this is pound for pound just as good as every monitor I've used in a studio environment, if not better. The new pen drivers work swimmingly. The screen feels much nicer than their older slick glass models. The colors are beautiful. I don't use the hotkeys and I probably never will, but if those are your thing, there's plenty to work with. Granted, there's no eraser, but you should be using hotkeys anyway. Learn to press E and save 1600 dollars. If anything happens in the long run I'll try to update this. But I legitimately can't believe I spent so little in comparison to a Wacom brand tablet and got something better than any tablet I've ever worked on professionally. Glowing recommendation.

My search for a great drawing tablet is finally over. I'm a seasoned designer and have been working on expanding my skill set in illustration and pattern design. My search for a drawing tablet has been a little bumpy. I started with the iPad Pro, and dropped a big chunk of change on it feeling confident I would love it. I wanted to use it with AstroPad so I could draw in Adobe Illustrator via my laptop, like a regular drawing tablet. Unfortunately, I hated the experience - the Astropad connection wasn't smooth enough for me and most importantly, the feeling of the Apple Pencil against the iPad glass made my skin crawl. I thought I would get used to it, but I never did, and my iPad ended up collecting dust. So I started looking into dedicated graphics tablets. I initially bought one from a different brand. It was a model that didn't have a display screen. I really liked the way that one felt; worlds better than the iPad. But the drivers for that one were super buggy and unreliable. So I sent that one back too. Finally, I decided to take a chance on the XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro and I am SO glad I did! The instructions for installing and setting up the drivers & controls were on the website and super clear (I'm on a Mac running Mojave). I was able to easily map all the buttons to the controls I wanted in Illustrator, and I was happily drawing no more than 40 minutes after opening the box. I've been using this tablet for a few days now and it's been smooth sailing. The display is big and beautiful and there's no lag. The screen feels great to draw on. Not exactly "like paper" as some have said, but it definitely feels nice. Nice glide but with just enough resistance to feel like an authentic drawing experience. I am very happy with this purchase. PROS: • Display is big and beautiful • Zero lag • Pen feels great on the screen • Easy to set up • Comes with lots of accessories Cons: • The 3-in-1 cable works great but feels bulky, especially if you are using the tablet anywhere other than a desk. But that's just what wires are like, I suppose. For me, the tradeoff is worth it b/c wires mean there's never any lag or connectivity issues. • It was a pain to find a case for this. I wish XP-Pen made one for this size tablet. I ended up purchasing this one and it's worked out well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JC8MZH1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great tablet! A few things though... I love this tablet, I have been wanting a tablet with a screen without parallax for years but I could never afford any because they always had a big mark up, even for smaller tablets. I love the colors on the screen as well as the buttons on the side. The buttons are great because for each program you use you can change what the buttons do, right now I have it set up for photoshop, animate, and Firefox, but I could add more programs if I needed to! The screen is great even when I am not using it for drawing or animating I use it as a second monitor. For set up I would like to stress how important it is to uninstall any old tablet drivers you have, most tablet drivers aren't compatible with each other so if you install a second tablet driver onto your computer it might cause unwanted issues and frustration. The instructions in the box are clear and give lots of different options on how to set up the tablet depending on what you want from it and what type of computer/laptop you are plugging it into. The only things about the tablet I want to mention that I see as a con are easily fixed for cheap, so I don't want to lower my rating. First off, the cable, the part of the cable that connects to the tablet sticks out straight and I find that it bumps into everything making me worried it might break. The fix is a 90 degree angle adapter for the cable, the one I bought makes it so the cable faces to the back of the tablet parallel to the side. The second is the stand, it does not have multiple angles, so I would recommend investing in a better stand that allows a wider range of angles.

Cons

Driver issues making left-handed mode and color calibration impossible, and pen calibration issues. Tried the XP-Pen after seeing a glowing review from Mobiletechreview on Youtube and didn't have the budget for a Wacom. First off, the XP-Pen is a gorgeous device! I was so excited when it came! The drawing surface has a nice matte finish and the pen is nice to hold and draw with. The presentation of the box is sleek and setup of the drivers was easy on Windows 10. The express keys are responsive and the scroll wheel is oddly fun to use. The stand only has one position, but it seemed safe enough to sub in another stand or put a few books behind it if you need a sharper angle. There are no VESA screw holes for a mounting arm. Unfortunately some problems started when I officially started putting this tablet to use. Upon turning it on, the colors looked quite nice and vivid! But eyeballing it with my other color-accurate monitors, the blues and reds are blown out and way off from where they need to be. Don't get me wrong; it looks nice, but I work with some print media and need them to be more in line with the rest of the monitors. I am also left handed, so I need the pen calibration flipped 180 degrees. Not a big deal, since you can adjust colors and rotation with the driver software, right? Well usually yes, but all the options for this are under a button in the Pentablet software called -Display Setting-. Every time I clicked Display Setting, I would get an error saying the tablet is not connected, even though I am using the tablet right now, viewing the software with it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the tablet and software, trying different power sources and display/usb ports, and even restoring my desktop to a slightly older version of itself. No dice. Both color management and pen rotation, the two most important things for me, are locked under this one button I couldn't access for seemingly no reason. The tablet worked fine otherwise. I’ve been looking for other ways around this, but there don’t seem to be any? In order for left-handed mode to work, you need to rotate your display settings on your desktop, rotate the monitor itself, AND rotate pen calibration via the software. If you don’t rotate calibration, the pen goes the exact opposite of where you place it on the screen. Plus the two side buttons only adjust brightness and not gamma, contrast, etc. On top of this, pen calibration is weird if you have more than one monitor hooked up. When calibrating the pen, a white screen with red x’s should appear on only the XP-Pen’s screen. However if I have a second non-drawing monitor hooked up, then the white screen gets split between them. I can’t fully calibrate the pen correctly as it’s split between two screens (and one x appears right in the middle of both screens and is unclickable).. I have to manually unplug the secondary monitor. I thought maybe it was just my rig giving these issues, so I tried it on my spare laptop, which has never been used for drawing or had a tablet hooked up to it. Same issue. Quickly tried with my SO’s laptop. Same issue. I have contacted XP-Pen a few days ago via Facebook, email, this Amazon product page and Twitter, but have yet to hear any reply about this. Will have to return this drawing display. Until XP-Pen updates their drivers or has a workaround for this problem, I would recommend holding off on this tablet if you're left-handed or need more precise colors. This could all just be a me-problem or just my specific tablet in particular, but wanted to give a heads up. I will revise this review if there ever is a fix from either me or XP-Pen.

Having issues after 3 months. Let me begin by saying, I love this tablet. The quality is beautiful and there are so many great features. I bought the 15.6 inch version and still greatly enjoy the fact that the large screen doesn't make me feel like I'm trying to draw on a little notepad or anything. The express keys make life easy and you can even program multiple presets to switch between. I first tried using it with a simple version of photoshop (not really suited for extensive digital art projects) and found it incompatible (pressure sensitivity was nonexistent), same thing with GIMP, and eventually ended up purchasing Clip Studio Paint, (absolutely wonderful program, 10/10 would buy everytime). The biggest complaint I have with this tablet (and its a pretty big one) is that ever so often I have an issue where the cursor jumps around, as if someone were shaking the mouse around really fast in a small radius. No big deal, I thought, probably just need to update the driver, and the website does indeed have the drivers ready to go and the update process is nice and easy. HOWEVER, now I find that I am having to do this almost every time I turn on my computer. Today I once again redownloaded the drivers and imported my presets only to find that the buttons on my pen are UNRESPONSIVE. I can't even draw anything because it is stuck in eraser mode on the pen. I did not pay $400 for a piece of hardware that is seemingly incompatible with the most basic Windows setup. I have my presets saved and the driver download page bookmarked on my browser, but the fact is that after only using this tablet for 3 months, I should not have this issue at all. I was very happy to find a tablet this size for a fraction of the cost of what Wacom charges (your leg and your first born child), but as it is giving me issues like this that constantly disrupt my workflow I am thinking of biting the bullet and buying an ipad or something. Of course it's too late to return my xp-pen through Amazon. But figured I would warn others because although this was cheaper than a Wacom, it still wasn't cheap, and every bit of info counts when researching a big purchase imo.

Just save up and get a Wacom instead. Set this tablet up according to instructions and the tablet display just shows black. I can tell that the tablet is on and receiving power and my pc detects the tablet, but nothing shows up on the screen no matter what I do. The support on their site is horrible. I tried several troubleshooting steps but nothing worked. I tried contacting their customer support via email, but have not received a response. Horrible experience so far. Would not recommend. Wacom may be more expensive, but I have never had a single issue with their products. I even have Wacom tablets from over a decade ago that still work. This is what I get for trying to save money and giving a smaller brand a shot.
