Pros
Amazing Monitor For A Software Engineer (and gamer by night). The monitor costs a ton but fulfilled a couple purposes for me. First, i wanted to stop using two 27" monitors side by side. The bezels and size of my old setup meant i felt like i was always searching to find stuff and turning my head a ton. Sounds weird, but turning my head to find something just annoyed me completely. Second, I wanted to be able to play games from my windows machine but do work with a macbook and get that single cable connection with thunderbolt 3. The good parts here are that the monitor solved my two main issues perfectly. Games look great in ultra-wide mode and my 2018 mbp gets full power supplied with a single cable. Oh, and the TB3 connection totally supports 144hz at full resolution. It's ... fantastic. The bad parts here are relatively minor but still annoying. First, when using TB3, my mac defaults to using the monitor speakers. I output those speakers to my desktop speaker set and that's cool. However, i can no longer control volume with my keyboard media controls and that's SUPER annoying. I have to change volume in specific apps (spotify, browser, whatever). My windows box sends audio through hdmi and this setup also lets it share speakers through the monitor, so that is still nice. The second annoying part is simply the amount of USB A ports. There should be at least two more and anybody like me is going to find this super annoying, too. I don't really care about the lack of PIP with TB3 and display port, but I could see how that would annoy people, too. Final gripe is the height adjustment and size of the base. The base is super deep and (even with a deep desk) causes my keyboard to be right at the edge of my desk if i want to use my laptop screen at the same time. Raising the monitor all the way is still too low to not block the bottom edge of the screen. I ended up taking some scrap wood and building a monitor riser to give me some more adjustability in the height of the monitor and that makes it better. Still too deep... I need to cut a notch out of my stand to let my laptop be a little deeper on my desk. [update 10/19/2021] Been using this thing for 6 months or so. Still love it. I started using a free utility called monitor control to control monitor brightness & volume with mac media keys. Big issues are fixed for me. I use EasyRes to set resolution and refresh rate but it doesn't maintain 144 across mac reboots. It always drops to 75hz. Annoying, but... meh. I've noticed that I despise the power button. It's not reliable at all and the menus are slow to display. You end up with a ton of double presses or misplaced selections. Not a deal breaker for me since I don't switch inputs a ton, but you might... I'd recommend it to anybody. I love this size for development and gaming.
Improved my work flow immediately. I cannot believe how much this monitor has improved my work flow. I'm extra enthusiastic to work on both my industrial obligations and creativity. The richness of color and ultra wide angle has enlivened all of my photography. I'll never look at another monitor again.
Fantastic monitor. I got this monitor a few month back and can't be happier. Important disclosure: I don't play games and I know this is supposedly a gaming monitor. I use it exclusively for writing code and all related activities as well as general browsing. The monitor is connected by 15 ft fiber optic cable from RUIPRO to 3090 GPU. (Before someone ask why I need 3090, it's for ML tasks and I actually have several of them). It runs at 144 Hz with native resolution of 3840x1600. The fiber optic cable is expensive but I tried all kinds of copper cables and they just do not work reliably at this distance/resolution. Right next to this monitor I have Acer Predator X38 Pbmiphzx, used for the same purpose. I know that Acer is quite a bit more expensive, but setting aside a fact that it supposedly comes pre-calibrated I like the LG one more, in both in picture quality and the fact that is has much smaller stand and space is at premium on my desk as I have tree 38" monitors on it.
Best dual purpose monitor in market. If you are in market for monitor that you can use for both gaming on Windows and work on Mac(looking at you software engineer folks), you are in right place. Productivity? Best in market. The biggest difference between this and 4k is that you can use this monitor @ native scaling, whereas typical 4k @ 32" monitor needs 125% scaling minimum. This allows you to have so many pages up which is incredible for productivity boost. Also, one cable solution for Mac with TB3 port. Gaming, this is only second best to OLED. 144hz, gsync, decent speakers, ultrawide immersion. This has it all, except it is not OLED. Such a bummer that there is no 38" OLED in market atm. I got this used for $760 which was absolute steal. I'd happily buy it again even at full price.
Great monitor. I had a small 24” flat monitor and went to a curved monitor and would never go back to a flat screen. This monitor has the type c connector so only 1 connection needed for my MBP. It even charges it!
Best productivity monitor for creatives! I'm a professional graphic designer and video editor. I have searched the internet for sometime now, looking for an ultra wide monitor that was great for graphic design & video editing. The picture quality is truly amazing & the 144z at this price point is unbeatable...This is truly a game changer! The Thunderbolt 3 port makes it the perfect monitor to pair with your MacBook or Mac! I'll be getting my use out of this for the next 7+ years!

It was cool until the pixels died. UPDATE 1/19/2022: I returned the first monitor and have had my replacement for about 11 months now. I'm happy to report that there have been no further issues with dead pixels. After almost a year of use, I think I've gotten used to all the quirks with the monitor. I am still extremely annoyed by the fact that the monitor continues to prompt me over and over about switching to the Thunderbolt when I am using a different input. For whatever reason, this never seems to happen when I am using another device on HDMI--it seems to be isolated to when using DisplayPort only. I check pretty regularly for firmware updates with hopes that LG will release an update to disable those annoying prompts, but I continue to be disappointed. Otherwise, I'm still happy with the monitor. I updated the review to 3 stars accordingly. If LG gives me the ability to disable those prompts, I would give it another star. It would still be a stretch for more than that, however. -- UPDATE 1/27/2021: After using this beast of a monitor for about a month, a row of pixels finally gave out. Just over half-way up the screen, the complete row of pixels died. It looks like a short strip (maybe 3-4mm) of vertical pixels appears to have gone bad as well. Those pixels intersect the row of dead pixels in the left-middle of the screen. While I have some tolerance for flaws, it seems there are a number of other people in these reviews that are having quality control issues with this monitor. Considering the price point is so high, it's disappointing to see such a common theme. Fortunately, Amazon is replacing the item for me; however, with such limited stock levels, it looks like I won't be getting the replacement for at least another 2-3 weeks. -- I really do like the monitor. Some things I really enjoy: - The size is amazing for productivity. I was concerned about going down to a single monitor, but at 3840x1600, that is not an issue AT ALL! - It is THIN! Some people have commented on the build quality, but mine was perfect out of the box. The power brick is a bit massive, but I've managed to tuck it up and away underneath the desk. - The color is AMAZING! The first time I launched some of my regular games, I was blown away by how crisp and colorful everything looked on the screen. I have definitely been missing out. And, on the negative side, there are some really awful features in this monitor. Like, some of them are so bad that whoever allowed them to be included should have had at least a minuscule of forethought that it was a bad idea. Here's my list: - The monitor has multiple video inputs (1x Thunderbolt, 1x DisplayPort, 2x HDMI). If Thunderbolt is connected and you are on a different input, say DisplayPort, the monitor likes to inform you randomly that Thunderbolt is connected with a prompt asking if you want to switch inputs. Then you have to go play with the switch, move it over to NO, and give it a click. A few minutes pass, "HEY, DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE INPUTS TO THUNDERBOLT?" No, LG. I don't. It's really annoying, and there is no option to disable that prompting. Kind of silly that a monitor with multiple inputs keeps trying to strong-arm me into switching over to Thunderbolt. - The brightness is insane, to the point of being too bright. - Picture-by-Picture does not work when you are using a Thunderbolt input. You can only do PBP with HDMI/HDMI and HDMI/DisplayPort. I think you'll grow away from using it since there is so much screen real estate, but... it's annoying if that's something you were planning to use. - Last... this monitor is $1600. The speakers are pretty rough. It needs an optical out in addition to the analog audio output. Overall, no regrets with the purchase. If they could do a firmware update to get rid of that annoying prompt to change input to Thunderbolt, then this would be an easy 5 stars. Til then, I'll continue to complain about it. It was a very clear project management fail, and they should remedy that at some point in the near ish future.
Great until the vertical lines show up. Bought this monitor in May of 2021 and it's now March of 2023. About three days ago I started getting the ghost-lines on the screen that suggest burn-in. I have a screen saver on all connected devices, so it's not like I just let it sit there with the lines. They do clear up sometimes when I switch between Displayport (which is how I connect my PC) and Thunderbolt (which is how I connect my Mac) and then back again, so that's nice. Aside from that, it's a genuinely great monitor that allows me to use both my m1 Mac and a PC with a high-end graphics card quite happily.
Macbook / Thunderbollt Users. The picture quality is excellent. When this monitor works, it works very well. There is plenty of screen real estate. It is not Retina/HiDPI but it still looks fairly sharp. Now there are a some drawbacks. - I use a Macbook Pro (M1) through a single Thunderbolt connection. My laptop lid is closed (clamshell mode). When the laptop goes into deep sleep (let's say 30 minutes or even overnight), trying to get the monitor to turn on and display an image is an exercise. You click the keyboard, the monitor backlight turns on, then it turns back off again. No image. Have to unplug and replug the monitor. Do this multiple times a day and it is the most infuriating experience. - Uses a large powerbrick instead of just having it built into the display. I guess LG wants the monitor to look thinner but honestly, I'd rather just not deal with a power brick. - The USB ports are slow to charge your phone or anything like that. In the end I decided to return this monitor because of the wake from sleep issue, which in my opinion is a real defect and does not seem to happen with other monitors which work just fine.
Screen Melted after 14 months ("Hot Pixel"). Purchased in Jan 2021 and used it as my 9-5 work computer for just over two years before the screen randomly failed and dramatically blistered during use (see photo) - I'd like to think it would have burnt itself out before starting a fire, but I didn't wait to find out! I loved the screen and wish I could still use it, but a 2-year lifespan is too short, and a 1-year warranty is not helpful. Sadly shopping for a non-LG brand panel to replace it!
It’s fine. As a Mac user I’m spoiled with displays that have a high PPI. I tried pairing this display with my M1 Max MacBook Pro but I ended up returning the display. If you don’t really care about such things then it’s a great monitor. USB ports on the back is a plus. I replaced this display with the 40” 5K2K display and that version is MUCH better. Words don’t look horrible and colors seem a lot better as well. I believe this 38” minor has some scaling issues as well, the 40” doesn’t have a problem. If you’re a Mac user, save yourself the trouble and get the 40” version of this monitor
Awesome upgrade from my LG34 but USB hub failed after 30 days. I've been using this monitor daily as my primary work monitor (I have 4 computers connected to it over Thunderbolt,(x2 > manual swap externally), DisplayPort(x1), and HDMI(x1). I swap connectivity by plugging and unplugging my USB dongle between computers when I swap between the non-TB systems and just swap the thunderbolt cable between laptops in those instances. It's fine and was planning on going the full DP KVM route once that was a viable option (I had a KVM going but I really wanted to take advantage of the refresh rate and GSYNC on the PC and getting a reliable KVM that can handle that just isn't possible right now - the ConnectPro doesn't work well). Anyway, the USB ports on the back worked for about a month and today no longer provide power or register the Logitech unified dongle...so now I have to swap the USB dongle between all my external systems, which sucks on the MacBooks given the lack of available ports (and the fact that the USB ports are all USB-C. Going to look into getting a USB switcher (kind of like a KVM without the M). But the point of the story is, the USB ports on the monitor failed after 30 days (maybe about 45 plug/unplug cycles). In order to get this repaired, I would have to send the monitor to an LG repair service center, leaving me without an external monitor, which would suck because... well... I donated my 34 inch to my wife so she could use it as we all work from home now :). So I'm kind of screwed for now. It's just frustrating that a $1600 monitor would start to have components fail after 30 days. By the way, for everyone experiencing crashes when their M1 MacBooks go to sleep when connected over Thunderbolt, set the DisplayPort to 1.2 on the monitor. This solved the issue for me.
