Pros & Cons

Pros

I use this for car camping, emergencies, and short overnighters. Pretty decently bright lantern. The media could not be loaded. Note: Requires 3 AA batteries. Pros: - Surprisingly lightweight for the size. - Feel solid; not cheap-o China plastic. - Bright: They've packed in some many LEDs it's ridiculous how bright this thing gets. - Versatile: I hang this and also simply put it on the table like regular lantern. - Low-profile: It folds up compact and is black (not an annoyingly loud color). It looks almost tactical. - Easy: It's so easy to turn on. Simple open it up and *bam* it's on (see video). No need to fumble in the dark for a tiny switch or button. Cons: - We had a cabin fire and I threw this out the window to break the glass so we could escape. It got lost in the bushes, and now I am saddened that my lantern is missing. This has been a test to see if you've read my review this far. If so, congratulations. I owe you lunch. And I am sorry for lying to you just now.

What more can you ask for? The media could not be loaded. I dropped it and it didn't break. They both light up very well, and the plastic doesn't seem to crack or break. I was happy to find that the batteries are included. It's a very simple, straight forward approach. These will light up a tent well, provide a work area, and help when the power goes out. The handles hang well. There is no flashlight feature. These are simple straight forward Lanterns.

Great bright little lanterns. We are campers. These compact, easy to use lanterns are ideal, especially for their price. For such a little laterns and not many batteries, these put off a good amount of light.. I suppose due to the led bulbs that are used in them. The hanging feature is great as well. We could place this on our picnic table or have the option to hang from the interior hook built into the roof of our tent. It provided plenty of light for us to take care of before bed things. These are a great addition to our camping bins. Shortly after we arrived home our house power had gone out, we grabbed one of these and were no longer sitting in the dark until my husband could get our generator going. I may buy a couple more to keep around the house.. much better than a flashlight in those situations, as they are directional light and these light up a room quite well.

GREAT VALUE! I can't say enough good things about these mini L.E.D. lanterns. When I rate a product, one of the most important criteria is, Value For The Dollar. These lanterns certainly deliver. They are light, compact and very bright. There are others on the market for a little less and some for a little more. My decision in purchasing these was that they were plastic. No rusting of the base or the body. The batteries seem to last forever. They are bright enough, that if you lock your eyes on them, your vision will get a little blurred. At roughly $7. a light, I feel I got great value for the dollar. I did read some reviews on other brands and read comments about some of the ones with the metal bases, rusting up after contact with moisture. JS SAYN

Perfect! I bought these for camping. So easy to use, super bright, super small and very lightweight. Thinking of buying more for power outages and whatnot. It's also nice that there's no switch. Just pull up and it turns on so you can adjust the brightness by how far you pull the top up. Easy in the dark! It also came with batteries which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommend! Oh, and they were much less $ then some others I saw.

Great lights! I bought 3, 2 packs of these for Christmas gifts, everyone loved them and they all worked perfectly. I (suggested) to those I bought them for to use them in the backs of their camper shells and non lighting trunks so they can see at night or use in an emergency. I was super happy with the quality for the price. As a almost daily Amazon customer I rely heavily on the reviews and consider myself a very picky consumer. I highly recommend these!

Cons

OK lantern BUT... For some reason this company, VONT, has started spam emailing me recently even though I bought this lantern almost a year ago. This is unacceptable and I would not recommend anyone buy anything from this company. If they're emailing you soliciting sales, no doubt they have sold your email address and whatever other information they have to others for a few pennies. Amazon needs to do something about this! As for the lantern, it worked OK for a while then the LED's started flickering making the thing useless.

Cascade Mountain Tech vs. Vont Camping Lanterns. This is a combined review of the Cascade Mountain Tech (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS5M4B1) & Vont (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018L2WM86/) portable lanterns. The first was purchased at Costco and the second on Amazon. I was very happy with the Cascade Mountain lights on a few camping trips, but it was impossible to ignore the huge number of reviews for the Vont and a Lightning Deal was the right time to buy. Same size and form factor. They look like they came from the same factory. Both are collapsible and come with AA batteries. What are the differences? * The Cascade Mountain unit has a soft diffuser around the LEDs, while the Vont visibly displays several LED arrays. The CM gives a more even, slightly whiter lite that covers the walls equally. The Vont's individual LEDs cast patterns on the walls and don't light evenly. It also has a decidedly bluer cast. The effect over time for me is more eye strain with the Vont. * The CM has a button with four lighting modes. High, low, red, and red strobe. The Vont has not power switch. It turns on when extended and off when collapsed. It's important to note that both units will shine less light when collapsed, but this doesn't diminish the light produced or electricity used. The same amount of light is created, but is shielded from sight when partially collapsed. DO NOT be misled by reviews that say you adjust output that way. The output is always the same, as the lower LEDs collapsed out of view continue to shine at full strength. So in short, the Vont shines 0% or 100% and you can just waste part of the 100% if yo chose. The CM can actually decreased the output and battery used in the process. At whatever brightnes it's set, collapsing also wastes a percentage of the produced light. * Both run on 3 AA batteries and run just fine on NiMH batteries. Curiously both have an unscrewable emtpy cap on top for storing something, nobody knows what exactly. Matches maybe? A small map. Who knows. Again, more evidence they have the same pedigree. While I'm glad I was able to purchase a couple of Vont units on sale, I will be putting this in the trunk of my car and in the basement., as they are perfectly fine to light up an area in a pinch and the pricepoint means you can distribute them in many places. But for camping trips and lighting of the home during power outages, the Cascade Mountains will be the clear choice and hold positions more likely to be used when needed. In the mean time, I will be watching both. At the extremely low Vont price, I still may feel compelled to pick up another pair. But it's the Cascade Mountain I will be holding out of for when it matters.

Luxury item for backpacking? I've used this twice now and I have some mixed feelings on this luxury item... The Good! My idea of outdoor adventures is to find an area, setup camp, use a couple days to explore/decompress, and of course be 'one' with nature. On our second to last trip we had eight people with us and this item was perfect for illuminating a ~6000 square foot area. I won't complain about how bright these are, they're pretty powerful in that regard. The Maybe... Most of my camping is going to be backpacking and sometimes it's nice to spice up the trip a few luxury items. I think these lanterns would qualify as a luxury item. If you're sharing the load for an adventure into the wilderness? Sure. These might make things a little easier at camp but I don't think I would take this on a solo or high-mileage trip. They're just too heavy and (one of these) take up too much space in your pack. However, that's for you to decide. Some people don't mind the extra space. Personally, I like to keep my base weights between 10 to 15 pounds. The lantern weights just over 10 ounces with batteries, that's too much for it's functional use. So, who is this for? In my opinion? Everyone. It's good for emergency use and great for car and campground camping. I think it's an acceptable luxury item for backpacking, especially if your splitting the load between a couple or few people. I just wouldn't take this on any solo trip or high mileage trip. How about it's design flaws and quality? I wish the hanging handles would snap to the sides. Additionally, I would also venture to say these lanterns are not very waterproof. When deployed open, these lanterns expose areas where water can get inside the enclosure. They're probably going to get damaged in any type of fall greater than a meter... These don't feel that solid and I am not expecting years on these lanterns... Come on, these things are without a doubt cheaply made. I think that's reflected in the price, just remember what you're buying. Final thoughts... For emergency use and those few times per year campers? This is not a horrible product... I think it'll work well for you and it keeps those activities affordable. Backpacking? You be the judge. Thanks for reading.

Really disappointed in product. I'm bought a lantern from the dollar store for a dollar it is lasted twice as long. Instead just as bright as both of these have already burned through the same batteries I am using and I ni-mh and nicd rechargeable batteries these Lanterns have proven to go dead the first one was less than 15 minutes on the n i MH the other one lasted longer maybe 30 to 45 minutes on nicd I don't recommend. Next time go to the Dollar Store getting the same small item I got because in the long run it's just as bright it last longer and you're not wasting your money

Bright, but near zero output around you. I watched a video review on these and was not impressed. Took two camping and they are very bright to look at, HOWEVER, they don’t brighten up an area very well. I had 2 in the tent and still couldn’t see well. Truth is, my iPhone has better light. Would NOT recommend.

If going to use outside, do not buy. These lights provide a nice level of brightness if your home loses power and you need a battery operated source of light. But only inside. However, if you are going to use outside, I would highly recommend not buying. I used mine outside one evening while grilling and didn't bring them inside afterwards. We happened to get a modest 30 minute rain in my area in the wee hours of the morning. The next time I tried to use them, about a week later, they wouldn't work. I couldn't figure out why not until I checked the battery compartment. It was completely rusted out as if I had left them outside exposed to the elements for years, it was that bad. The lack of even being slightly water resistant, to the point where if you live in a high humidity area (never mind rain), I'd be concerned that these would rust out fairly quickly.
