Pros & Cons

Pros

Gosky 2019 Updated Scope vs Roxant Blackbird Scope. I have had and enjoyed using the Roxant Blackbird Scope. Mountains behind our house are about 4 miles away and I wanted something that could dial in a little better for observing wildlife and decided on this Gosky 2019 model. I'm impressed. The Gosky is better in almost every way except size, where it's about double the size of the Roxant. The Roxant is great for it's mobility, something you could grab and sit on the hood of a car while site seeing. This Gosky is a bit larger, but, the performance is pretty darn good. It's ability to focus on distant objects is significantly better than the Roxant. The focus wheel on the Gosky is also easier to use. One thing I did notice on the Gosky is that zooming in/out on any object always requires refocusing as well (not so much on the Roxant). But the ease of focusing makes this a minor issue. As others have pointed out, the tripod is not the greatest. However, it serves my needs just fine. By the way, the tripod that comes with both the Gosky and Roxant are nearly identical. I like the Roxant for its size and it is convenient for shorter distances (several hundred yards or less). However, the Gosky for my purpose (generally sitting in my backyard with the scope sitting on a table) is now my go-to scope. The clarity and focus at long distances sets it apart. Comparing these two models is like comparing apples to oranges. I only compare the two since these are the only two I have experience with and may help someone else with a decision. The Roxant is about $80 while the Gosky is about $140. The specs are obviously different as well with the Roxant spec'd at 12-36x50 while the Gosky spec's at 20-60x80. If your distance is within a few hundred yards, save your money and go with the Roxant. If you're looking for a scope that can focus really well at long distances, then you may want to consider the Gosky (or a competitor that has similar specs). I see some scopes that are 15 times the cost of this Gosky with similar specs and I wonder what those scopes provide that this Gosky doesn't (perhaps a better tripod, night vision?). If someone experienced with spotting scopes can shed some light on how the significantly more expensive models compare, that would be helpful.

OK for Target Shooting - within limits. I bought this to use on the rifle range. I hoped to use this for spotting up to 300 yards, but I knew that the distance might be stretching the capacity of the scope. At the outset, one has to say that there is actually nothing wrong with this scope. The scope appears to be well-made and sturdy. Adjusting the scope for power and focus is easy. The phone mount actually works pretty well. You have to fool around with it to get a good fit on the spotting scope and it takes some patience to get the target centered in the spotting scope so that you can see the image on the camera. But it does work, and the images come out pretty well. I did not modify the images above to enhance them in any way other than to crop them so that I could post them in this review. I didn’t bother to use the included tripod because I had a much sturdier version of my own. The padded case works well and should be substantial enough to protect the scope from damage due to the regular bumps that it will invariably receive. I gave this scope four stars because it does well for the money, but it does not have the quality found in scopes that are far more expensive. If you are intending to use this for the range, be aware that your target distance will determine your degree of satisfaction with this scope. I used spatter targets for my 5.56mm rifle, hoping that the targets would highlight enough for the shots to be seen on the scope. (The 5.56 mm round leaves the same size hole as .22, or .223 rounds - so it is pretty small.) I put the scope on a good solid tripod on a concrete target table. If I was careful not to touch the scope very much I could see the shots at 200 yards pretty well. The photo on the left was taken of a target 200 yards downrange with my iPhone that was attached to the scope. There was a pretty good wind blowing at the range, and the wind affected the scope to the extent that I really had trouble seeing where the rounds impacted. When the wind was calm, of course, the image improved. When I used the scope for my targets at 300 yards, It was nearly impossible to get a clear view of the target because of the wind blowing the spotting scope around. The camera has a quicker eye than I do, and it caught some good shots at 300 yards. As you can see, you can just make out the shots on the spatter target. The targets in the photos are 17 inches in diameter, and the bulls-eye is 3 inches in diameter. The quality of optics really makes a difference. I use a 4.5x14x44 Sig Sauer scope, and the shots on the rifle scope appear clearer than with the spotting scope for 200 yards. If you are shooting at 25-150 yards, I think that this scope will make you happy. At distances greater than that, you have to balance the small dent this makes in your budget against your need to see your shots at greater distances. If you are not going to use splatter-type targets, then scale down your expectations. At the bottom line, this is a well-made spotting scope for the money that will work on the range at reasonable yardage. If you want to get a spotting scope for regular use at 200+ yards, then you will probably have to pay a lot more for a scope that has much clearer optics.

Amazing quality for the money. Quality and view is great. Awesome beginner scope. Bought with the intention of glassing elk and put it to use the first night. Also got to set it up on a full moon. The only negative about this scope is the tripod which was easily fixed by ordering another one off amazon for $20. Still I am $250 ahead of the game compared to a vortex scope.

Great Value for the Money! The media could not be loaded. My bird watching friends recommended spotting scopes that were way out of my price range! Scopes with prices up to $2,500! I decided as a hobbyist birder I would first try an entry level scope. After reading reviews, I decided on the Gosky 20-60X80. Oh my, was I shocked when I received the scope. It is very solid and of a really nice quality, better than I had expected. It is easy to use, has a sharp focus knob and magnification knob. The included bag is a bit tight and hard to get the scope in and out of but the included tabletop tripod is perfectly adequate. I have mounted the scope to a full size tripod I used for DSLR photography so I have more adjustments and can use it on the ground. You can see the photos I took with the included mobile phone adapter (20X scope magnification and 2X iPhone lens). Check out the video of the Downey Woodpeckers. (20X scope magnification 1X iPhone) They were all taken during cloudy weather, so the light was really not great. I guess the only small drawback to this scope is it is good but not great in low light, especially on higher magnification. I find that by putting the phone on the scope makes it much more comfortable than keeping your eye on the eyepiece, especially when waiting for a bird to land on the feeder. I do like the adjustable eyepiece relief. Is it a $2500 scope, no, but for $125 it is a good, solid scope that gives a clear magnified view so I can identify and photograph birds. I bought it as a starter scope, but as a hobbyist I am not sure why I would spend another $1000+ to upgrade to something that is perhaps marginally better, unless perhaps I was a professional.

Great optics and perfect magnification....excellent customer service. I have owned several telescopes and spotting scopes in my 54 years starting with my first as an 8 year old. Over the years I have learned what is important and my research led me to this spotting scope. It got it and found it to be very good. I also Emailed the Gosky company on another matter regarding spotting scopes and their customer service is excellent.

Camera attachment is the best part. Easy & FUN to use. I think this was actually a pretty good deal for the money.

Cons

Disappointed optics and build. Disappointed in build quality and image. At first it seems well made but then you notice the little uneven seems and the loose parts-like the generic tripod that, when screwed in fully, has the camera rocking back and forth on the plate still; or the rain shade that pops fully off along with the metal ring on the end when you go to try it…and then there’s the phone adapter. It’s also cheap (to be expected) but it didn’t work well with my iPhone XS Max. And of course there’s the image itself which, at any average human eye distance, looks roughly normal, but then the more you zoom in far away it just gets incredibly distorted. Edges of subject are nearly purple, and definitely nothing is sharp in the least. Maybe this one is defective, or maybe my expectations where too high; I have celestron bird watching binoculars cost about the same price and the quality in optics is night and day. I also use a pair of Leopolds that were more but not by too much-but that comparison is probably unfair. You can always expect some distorting when you get to long distance but this was surprising. I really wanted to like them. Comes with a modest but sufficient carrying case. All the many 5 star Amazon reviews seem a little….unbelievable, or suspicious. Idk. this scope just don’t seem worthy of the current ratings. Again maybe mine are defective.

Decent scope for the price. Decent scope for the price paid. Or, in other words, you get what you pay for. Why I couldn't give it 5 stars: The rotating portion of the mount collar grinds when used. Not smooth. The grip of the tripod must be clamped down to hold the scope in place. Finding the sweet spot of providing enough clamping resistance to be able to move the scope and be able to let go of it is almost non-existent. Optics can focus to quite sharp at lowest magnification. Anything above that and the sharpness quickly drops off. If you don't want to spend $600 or more this scope will work for you.

Ya get what you pay for. These photos were taken at 150 yards with the phone mount that comes with the scope. I am not a professional photographer it was taken with Samsung S5. Scope leaves a lot to be desired I suppose this is what you get at this price point. Positive features the case has nice and holds everything I just wish it came with the window mount that I had to be purchased separately. At further distances this thing is worthless everything becomes blurred. The worst thing about this is the mounting threds on the bottom of the scope wasn't even tapped all the way so the screw bottoms out and leaves the scope sitting sloppy.

Poorly assembled, not robust. Poorly assembled. Barrel of objective lense cross threaded and askew. Ring at front front of sun shade not screwed in. Small tripod only useful for table tops so consider purchasing additional more robust standard camera tripod or flexible legged tripod depending on your use. Camera attachment is functional but weak - will break easily. No lanyards for objective or ocular lens cap covers. Carrying case not well padded. Designed for light backyard use - not for bird nerds, hunters, or wildlife biologists. I claim all three of those titles so I'll be giving this to one of my kids and seeking a more rugged option.

Poor quality. Where to start. Well 20-60 ring sticks to the point where it moves where it is pointed if you try and adjust. At anything over 40x the image is too dark to be useful. I bought an ED version from GoSky that will most likely be kept, but for right now this one even on sale is getting returned.

Seems to work well but pain to set up with phone. I got it beginning of the month and didn’t open it until today. It had previosuly been opened. The plastic that would have been around scope was in the bottom of the box. The pieces for the phone mount were just laying in the bottom of the storage bag. Not positive if i got all the pieces or not. Setting up the phone mount was a little bit of a pain. More because it is an iphone 13 pro and wasn't sure which lense to use. Once I figured it out i think it will work great.
