Pros & Cons

Pros

Took my old grill to the curb. I've had my Ninja for a few months now, and freaking LOVE IT. I hated grilling. I had to deal with propane, constantly go in/out to check on it, and rarely had much success even with thermometers and stuff. But this, not only does it air fry, which I rarely use as my oven does that, but it grills. Now, just grilling is one thing, but the real secret is the settings and the thermometer. Toss a couple chicken breasts on it, stick the thermometer in them, set it for chicken, and it'll beep when they are *perfect*. The grill is super easy to clean too, non-stick, so just rinsing it is usually fine. If I had to complain it would be that it takes a couple minutes to heat up, but I think they all do that. Recipe for my chicken breasts (you gotta buy the nice cuts, not the cheapo ones): Both sides: Rub in olive oil Generously sprinkle Adobo on it Generously sprinkle Butter flakes on it Lightly sprinkle Hidden Valley ranch stuff on it. Drop em in, and in about 14 minutes you have amazing chicken. Throw a couple potato's in the microwave when you put the thicken in, and its all done about the same time. Quick, easy, pretty healthy. I use it almost every night now.

Game changer!! I bought this to use during winter, and it’s amazing! Worth every dollar! The temperature probe is spot on to the doneness it’s associated with! Perfect medium well steaks every time! Super fast too! If you’re a meal prepper or want an easy way to grill in the winter, don’t hesitate, buy it! Salmon, shrimp, and scallops are amazing on it too! Clean up of the grills can be a little messy in the sink, but I think that’s just a given.

Ninja grill review. I’ve had this grill for six months, and I love it. It is so easy to clean. You just pull them out rinse them spray little soap when I wash them again., the food comes out delicious. I would buy this again in a heartbeat and I would recommend it to anybody.

Now THIS is an air fryer ... I tried the Nuwave Brio 8-Qt Air Fryer, which I sent back. Poorly programmed, it gave me a headache trying to figure out how to use it when all I wanted to do was start cookin'! Not with the Ninja. Gave the instructions a quick glance and off I started. OMG. It's so easy to use. And fun! It automatically preheats and tells you when to add food, turn food and take out food. Idiot proof. lol I air fried a boneless, skinless chicken breast tonight with the included meat thermometer. Delicious! Brown and slightly crispy on the outside, juicy and moist on the inside. Even my mother loved it! Bottom line: if you want an air fryer that you will actually use, get the Ninja. I am so motivated that I'm going to buy a beef roast that's on sale at Mariano's. And cook it on the "roast" selection. With the inserted meat thermometer. Thank you, Ninja!

A great product cooks well and fast in all functions it’s designed for. Great product cooks well in all functions and using thermometer for cooking meat and chicken and pork chops works well I like steaks medium and using thermometer while it’s broiling cooks it perfectly and fast

This is a good balance of grill and air fryer. I moved from a home into a condo awhile ago. Condo rules prohibit the use of an outdoor grill. Bummer. I never cooked meat inside at the house. I have a toaster oven that bakes really well...but I didn't want to clean the aftermath of broiling. So, steaks were out. So, I checked out indoor grills and this one, the Ninja FG551 had great reviews. It works very well but there are things to know. You need to learn the grill. Just like I had to learn my outdoor gas grill. My first efforts were good, but I'm getting better results as I use it more. You really need to heed the "rest" instructions as your food will continue to cook when taken off of the grill. The air fryer works well. I've done chicken and French fries that were delicious. Cleaning is easy as the surfaces are non-stick. But the grill surface has ridges that are a bit difficult to get a sponge into. I've learned to just throw mine into the dish washer. Works great. I never see smoke coming from my Ninja. But, my kitchen has a smoke alarm just feet away from my countertops (bad design). I learned to move the grill over to the space beside my stove and to turn my vent on to low. Completely fixed the alarm from going off. This is a good grill. Well made, functions as advertised and I'm liking it more and more with use.

Cons

An Overpriced Air Fryer That Is Hard To Keep Clean. We use this a lot. For the two of us, it works well as an air fryer or a small indoor grill, although it takes a terribly long time to heat up, considering the interior capacity isn't that large. My major complaint: It is a chore to clean. The basket, grill, grease tray and filter are removable for clean up. That's the relatively easy part. The entire interior of the unit has to be cleaned as well. Steam/grease penetrates any seam or surface, even the hinges of the lid. It is very clumsy to work with. The lid gets grease baked on it. It's awkward to wipe out. There are exposed metal edges. Plus, the outside has to be wiped clean, when finished with the interior. Steam/grease leaves a film on the unit which converts to smudged fingerprints on the black surface, after you've handled the unit to clean it. The components do not store in the unit. You have to store either the basket or grill separately. They make a point of how neatly the temp probe tucks away and, here I stand, wondering what to do with the grill. The grill should be reversible so the flat side is usable as well. The temp probe is somewhat of a dubious feature as the interior doesn't allow for large pieces. The domed lid gives the appearance of a large capacity, but the filter consumes much of the interior space. It's too large to store, which makes it a countertop fixture. (Both my former air fryer and grill fit on the lazy susan shelves.) We later purchased a rolling tray to set it on, so it was easier to move in/out on the counter. Wouldn't buy again or recommend enthusiastically.

Great Potential but Awful Customer Service and Poor Quality Control. I love Ninja Foodi Smart XL. It is truly smokeless. I love grilling and used to use my outdoor grill 3-4 times a week. After kids moved out and we downsized to a condo and our kind of suggested that we were smoking them out, I decided to move it indoors. Well began the challenge of smoke detectors going off with the smallest amount of cooking, even if I used the pan to sear my steaks. I tried almost everything on the market and nothing worked great. My Breville Indoor grill came the closest but it would press down on my steaks and made them dry. Ninja is the first appliance I found to do a great job and really do all it claimed to and more. I have cooked steaks, chicken breasts, chicken wings, fish, fried veggies and potatoes, and much more with excellent results. I would say, it is the best appliance in a kitchen. I even prefer making toast or reheating the croissants with it. So why the 1 star? Because although the product is great, their quality control and customer service is just bad. Here is why: 1- I got my first unit from Target in December of 2020. Immediately out-of-box, the timer control did not work. You had to try dozens of times to get it to change. I had to basically use my phone as a timer. So I returned it to the store to exchange. They were out-of-stock so they refunded me. Figured it was one of a million, anyone can have a product failure. 2- I went directly to the Ninja website and placed an order on Dec 7, 2020, for the same Ninja. It took the 3 weeks to get it to me. All excited and got busy cooking. I discovered immediately that this unit has a defect too. The timer button worked, but the temperature control would not go down. No matter how many times you pressed down, it went up instead. If you pressed up, it went up to. So disappointing, but figured this is a company that cares about their product and customer service, so I wrote to them about my problem. First, they wrote back and said I had to have their tech support troubleshoot. They keep office hours, so had to call during my workday in order to talk to their tech support. He was able to agree with me that this unit is defective (come on, how many ways can you press a down button?) and has to be returned in the original box. I don't know how many people living in an apartment can store a large empty box. Fortunately, I had kept mine. But wait, I had to pay the shipping cost. I argued that according to their 90-day try-out policy, they advertise free shipping both ways. After checking he agreed. But wait, he could send me a new base for me to change and return the old base but I had to pay for shipping. Why would I pay anything for a defective product less than 2 days old? I asked that a new unit be sent to me and I will ship the old unit back when I get the new unit. I even offered to pay them for a new unit and they could just refund the money for the first unit when they received it. That is not my department. If you want a new unit you can go on-line and purchase a new one. I explained that they were selling them for $229.00 on December 7th but now the price is $279.00. He said that is not my department. I can refund you when we get the unit and inspect it and make a determination that is defective. Wait, it gets better. I like the concept and was willing to try again. This time I went to Amazon and order another unit. It came quickly and I just received it last night. All excited, I inspected all the buttons, and yes they seem to work. Great. Happiness at last, until I noticed each time I open the top, it rocks up and back about an eighth of an inch, and the front legs are off the counter by that much!!. I still had the previous unit, so I put them side-by-side to compare and realized the new unit is completely missing the button metal plate, that is why it is rocking. So 3 out of 3 purchase in one month is defective and a customer service that does not care really about service. Amazon sends out a replacement unit for defective products and you use that box to turn the old unit. That is customer service. Trying to ask the customer to pay to ship a product that is defective is fraud especially when you are advertising differently. Refusing to immediately ship me another unit, even when I offered to authorize them to charge my credit card because I loved the unit and did not want to go without one for 6 to 8 weeks, is really bad customer service. Remember, it costs about $60.00 to ship it back, and beware after 90 days runs out, we are stuck with a company that does not care about the customer or service or quality control. I did purchase Amazon's extended warranty option and have my figures crossed. The concept is great. I love it. Someday either Ninja will get their act together, or a major manufacturer will come up with a competing product. Until then, all we can do is hope our unit does not break-down!

really great , But. I love this product for speed and great cooking, everything even if you mess up a little comes out and taste great. It is the cleaning I don't like, even if it does have a good non stick surface. I have all the interior cooking items soaking in the sink now, it will take me a good 45 minutes to clean it all. There are times I just won't use so I don't have to clean. All in all it's a well made product and does cook as advertised.

Too big. Was a present for my aunt. It was too big for her kitchen counter so we sent it back. Didn't even use it once. Shame it didn't fit.

112 degree beef is medium rare? For some reason this thing thinks 112 degree internal tempurature corresponds with a medium rare steak?! Well, cooking my steak to level 3 "medium rare" shut off at that temperature and when I waited as I'm supposed to do for 4 minutes before going at it, what I found was an extremely rare, perhaps raw steak. Next time I'm just going to try doing it manually with an internal temperature of 135 degrees which is a more common idea of "medium rare". I want to see if taking the "smarts" out fixes it or the basic concept is defective. I did what I was supposed to do... Thermometer inserted all the way in the thickest part of the cut. I will edit this review based on those findings, but maybe this thing is too smart for its own good, or maybe just defective. Addendum: Cooking on "manual" a steak to an internal temperature of 135 degrees DOES produce what I consider a reasonable rendition of a medium rare steak. I consider using it this way superior to a manual method where you cook for a while, open it, lose all the heat while you stick a thermometer in, then close it again and either under or over cook. Cleaning is simple with that no-stick surface. And it is virtually smoke free as advertised. On this basis it goes from 2* to 3* in my "final verdict".

Great until it dies the day after the warranty expires. We used this all the time, and it was great while it worked! Then the other day when I was making fries it started smelling like burnt plastic and stopped recognizing when the lid opened- the fan stayed running, it didn't stop displaying "add food" just zero response from the machine to the lid being opened. Add to that the burning plastic smell and I just don't trust it anymore. Loved this machine and used it nearly every day for a year, but expect better longevity and warranty out of Shark/Ninja products.
