Pros & Cons

Pros

Yes. You want this ... My wife and I recently moved into a new place with a covered patio space. As soon as we saw it, we eyeballed one side of it and said to each other, “that’s where the jacuzzi will go.” We couldn’t afford getting into it right then, but that didn’t stop my wife from “window shopping.” A fixed installation spa was out of the question, due to cost and installation hassles, so one of these inflatables was a perfect solution. She narrowed down her search to a few different models, and we ended up buying this one. SETUP: Setup of this spa is very simple. Many reviewers have griped about the instructions, and they’re right. The only part of the instructions that are “written” are all the warnings about what NOT to do. The actual set up instructions are all in pictures; the drawings are tiny (unless you pull up a copy online that you can blow up on your computer screen), and Bestway uses the same manual for a number of different spa models with slightly different features, so the illustrations you’re looking at don’t always match up exactly with your particular spa. The good news is, however, that there are only a few loose parts you actually have to deal with, and they’re pretty simple to figure out once you’ve got everything out of the boxes they come in. The one part I had the most trouble with was the plastic air hose. It’s only used for one thing: inflating the spa. Once the spa is inflated, hose removed, and the separate cap screwed down on the air inlet valve fitting, you just put the hose away. The hose fitting that screws onto the pump unit has holes in it, and when you start inflating the spa, air rushes out of these holes very noisily, making you think you’re missing a gasket/seal, or screwed something up. Fear not ... that’s the way it’s supposed to work. The air blower in the control unit is designed to blow a very high volume of air into the spa jet tubing, with only limited resistance, so this “relief” vent feature on the air hose ensures that the blower doesn’t get damaged as the spa reaches max inflation pressure. When you’ve selected and prepared the area you plan to put the spa on, I HIGHLY recommend putting down some interlocking exercise mat or similar foam material to cover the entire area the spa will rest on. I found a perfect product for this at Home Depot: dark grey foamcore material coated with black rubber/vinyl, “diamond plate” pattern on one side, smooth on the other. They come in packages of six 24x24 inch squares, at a cost of about $25/pkg. Two packages gave me the 9 squares I needed to create a 72-inch square mat for the spa, plus 3 extra squares for use elsewhere, or to keep as spares to replace any that get damaged. Once you’ve pumped up the spa, you literally just line up the pump unit with the corresponding fittings on the “business” side of the spa, and insert/tighten the fittings by hand. No tools required. There are only three fittings: one large one for air, and two smaller ones for water intake/discharge. I cut one of my spare mat squares to put underneath the pump, because our spa rests on concrete, and the foam layer under the pump reduces transmission of vibration/noise from the pump into the concrete ... makes the pump a little quieter. FILLING UP: If you’re like us, by the time you get to the point of filling the spa with water, you’ll be dying to get in it, but first you’ve got to heat up the water. Turn on the power (you have to hold your finger on the power switch for a few seconds before it goes on). One button activates the water pump, a second button activates the heater, and a third button activates the air. The only ones you’re using at this point are the pump and heater. You don’t turn on the air blower until the water’s fully heated, and you’re ready to soak. As many reviewers have noted, heating the water takes a pretty long time, because the heating element in the main pump just doesn’t have the power to rapidly heat hundreds of gallons of water from cold to the spa’s maximum temp of 104-degrees F. Here’s a couple of handy “hacks” that will help speed that process up. Run a garden hose from your water heater drain valve into the spa, and empty the heated water into the spa one or two times as it’s filling up with cold water from another source. Another trick: when you buy your spa, also get a submersible, small pool heating rod. The one we got cost about $35, and draws around 1500W. Put the heating rod into the filled spa, and run it at the same time you’re running the spa’s pump/heater system ... just make sure the heater is plugged into an electrical circuit entirely separate from the one you’re using to run the spa pump. We did both of these hacks, and had the spa fully heated and ready for use less than 24 hours after we filled it with water ... and that was at a time when the overnight air temps at our house were at, or below freezing. RUNNING THE SPA. When all the preps were done, the spa was filled and heated to 104, and we got into it for the first time, all I can say is ... WOW. 104 may not sound very hot, but it is. The temp does slip a few degrees once the air’s turned on, but so far for us, water temp has held very steady at 99-100 even after we’ve been in the bubbles for a half-hour, and ambient air temp has been pretty cold (e.g., 40's). The volume and massaging action of the air/bubbles put out by the pump and jets that run around the bottom corners of the spa is truly impressive ... FAR better than most hotel/other spas my wife and I have been in over the years, and this one is right outside our back door, anytime we feel like getting into it. The spa cover comes with an inflatable insert that fits snugly into the void between the top of the spa walls and water level. The insulating properties of this design (combined with the walls of the spa and layer of insulating material beneath) are just amazing. Using nothing but our submersible heater (I turn the pump off overnight, because while it is fairly quiet, it does make some noise, like those annoying fish tank pumps you may recall from your childhood), and even with ambient air temps dropping into the teens some nights, I’ve been able to maintain the water temp at 104 degrees, or higher, throughout the night, without having to run the pump at all. ELECTRICAL. With respect to the spa’s electrical requirements, when the air, water pump and heater are all running, this thing draws 12 amps, which is a lot of power. That’s why it has to be plugged into a dedicated electrical outlet, with nothing else plugged into it. The plug end of the OE electrical cord is very bulky, with its own built-in safety/circuit breaker, and generally requires an entirely flat outlet surface to seat right. The outlet we’re using for ours is an exterior one in a metal box with a cover. I couldn’t plug the OE cord into it without using an adapter (15A rated) to move the female outlet surface from the back of its box to the front. While the manufacturer warns that you can’t use an extension cord with their spa pump, you can, if you have to ... you just have to make sure the cord you’re using is rated to carry at least 15 amps, and is no longer than necessary to connect the end of the OE cord to your power source. IF you need to use an extension cord, you should also regularly check both ends of the cord while the spa’s running, to make sure no part of the cord is getting hot ... if it is, you need a heavier-duty cord. CONSTRUCTION/WARRANTY. I’ve seen a few reviewers complain of leaks in the units they’ve received, and that concerned me a little when we bought ours. However, I’m happy to report that what I’ve seen in ours so far is a very well-designed and well-constructed product. The main spa material and fittings seem very durable/solid, and have worked perfectly for us so far. If you promptly register your spa purchase with Bestway (they require that be done within a few weeks of the purchase), they’ll double their normal warranty periods on the spa components. SANITIZING. The filter and chemical dispenser that come with the spa are very simple to use. The filter screws onto the water intake port/fitting, and the chemical dispenser screws onto the discharge port/fitting just above the other. I use one-inch brominating tablets, but you should note that the 1-inch tablets don’t fit in the dispenser supplied with the spa. They have to be cut in half to fit, or you can just buy your own “floater” type dispenser. I prefer the OE dispenser though, just because it’s fully submerged in the spa, and doesn’t bump into the spa cover liner. CONCLUSION. In sum, my wife and I couldn’t be happier with what we got for our money on this product, which has literally changed our lives. There is nothing like being able to jump into a hot, soothing spa after a long day at work, especially when you can do that in the privacy of your own home, any time you want. We’re both more relaxed when we go to bed, sleeping more soundly through the night, and generally feeling less stressed out, all the time. My thanks to Bestway and Amazon for making all that possible for us, at an affordable price. [Update: now going on two months of daily use: everything's still working great; no air or water leaks; no problems with pump unit or connection seals. I'm now using the submersible heater mentioned in the main review, in conjunction with an "Inkbird" temperature-controlled power switch, and separate, submersible water pump (to circulate spa water when the heater is on) to keep the spa water at constant temp between 104 (heater/pump goes on) and 107F (heater/pump goes off), without having to run the OE spa pump/heater all the time. Now, I only run the OE spa pump/heater/blower while we're in the spa, and for a few hours after each use to clean/filter the water. Result: less wear/tear/unnecessary running of the OE spa pump/heater; and water is ALWAYS at perfect temp for immediate use, anytime we want ... just pull off the cover, turn off the accessory heater/pump, turn on the OE pump/heater/blower ... great use-efficiency upgrade to an already-great product!] [Second update (5/7/2022)] After months of daily use, everything is still working great, but I will add that you need to test/pay attention to your water chemistry, if you don't want to have to keep emptying/refilling the tub. Up until about a week ago, I had only treated the water with bromine, but we started having trouble with the water foaming up while the jets were on, so I studied up a bit and found out this can be caused by chemical imbalance. I got a kit which included pH up/down, alkaline up/down and calcium (hardness) up additives, and used all of them as directed to get all these key measurements into "ideal" balance. Foam issue went away almost immediately, the water looks cleaner, and my secondary heater core isn't accumulating rust anymore (low "hardness" will accelerate rusting of any metal the water comes into contact with). STILL a "five-star" purchase from Amazon.]

A family favorite. This is the second of these tubs we've had. The first lasted 4 years. It held up well, especially since we left it up full time through the winters. We liked it so much that when we redid our sunroom we bought another to keep inside and out of the sun and harsher freeze / thaw cycles. My teenagers love a good soak after sports. While my younger kids love to "swim" in it. It seats 3 adults comfortablely, but isn't too bad with 4. There isn't any directional jets, but it does have a ring of air bubbles. They are relaxing, but a little loud with the tub inside the sunroom. The biggest disadvantage to using the bubbles is they cool down the water much more quickly than just a soak. Overall we really love this tub and look forward to using it daily!

Best Investment for physical & mental health. Easy set up, I thought I was doing it wrong but it’s really that simple. I inflated using a car powered inflator I had so I can’t review that portion but everything else has been easy breezy. Had for 2 months, once I figured out how to balance the water ( bought chemical set off Amazon) it’s been easy breezy! USE THE BUBBLER JETS. When you add your chemicals take the cover off and turn the jets on, don’t use jets with cover on this can damage it. I have this set up in garage and kept at 102 at all times with lid on unless I’m using it or adding chemicals, it takes about an hour or 2 with garden hose to fill to fill line. I joined a Hot Tub for beginners Facebook group when I couldn’t get my chemical levels and water to be clear. Against suggestions I do have this plugged into a heavy duty extension chord to an outlet in my garage, I’ve had no issues this far. Best investment for my physical and mental healthy so far, just so relaxing and good for pre period menstrual use , it has eased my cramps prior to that start date. Just get it! And order extra filters and chemicals on Amazon.

Filters. We have 2 of these pools. They are excellent- one word of caution however. Ensure you purchase good quality replacement filters. Otherwise your pool will be throwing an EO2 code regularly and you will be chasing all sorts of solutions except that as it is never mentioned in any instructions or videos for fixing the code.

Jet's are as powerful as a hard side spa. Love this! It's so perfect for my small backyard and easy to move. No special electrical or water lines needed. Heats up to 104° just like a hard side. I used it like a pool in the summer and just took it down for the winter to extended my usage. So easy to keep clean and treated. Its flay bottom makes it so nice to sit or stand in; unlike a hard side spa which had seats that can only be sat in. My grand daughter learned to swim in it. Can't say enough! Love, love, love it!

Do it!!! Best choice, I have made. Excellent for money. Very nice. Treat yourself. It is definitely worth it!

Cons

The pump is not working upon set up! And read my other problems with spa submitted later. This is a Hawaii SaluSpa by Bestway we installed on 5/7/22. I have given it only 2 stars initially, as we immediately had a pump error problem. I’ll give it 5 stars if we/they can get the pump working but not til then. I am hoping this review will get Bestway to call me back. I have registered the product and requested a call back. I was hoping it would be immediate, but NOT! Anyway, the S100105 pump is plugged in but if I press the filter or the heat I get an E08 error (thermal cut-out cut-off). So if I clear the error through the GFI plug and turn the pump on again, I can run the massage feature, but as soon as I choose the Filter button or the Heat button, I get the E08 error message again. On other spa pumps of theirs it appears there is a reset on the pump itself, but there is no external reset we can find on the S100105 pump. The electrical outlet itself is a dedicated 110 line and sufficient for the pump to operate. We even switched the plug to another outlet dedicated just for the A/C unit if needed by the A/C technician, and it was the same problem and error message. So now I have a spa full of 222 gallons of water and no way to heat or to filter it. I am hoping for a call back soon, or I am going to ask for a replacement or just plain return it for a refund. Very unhappy. Also the set up instructions are non-existent. You have to go online to find how to do everything. Very upsetting to say the least. Very tired after all day of setting everything up and having it not work. If Bestway monitors this site - I hope they will get in touch with me. Just search for my online registration that I completed on 5/7/22. Purchased spa online on 5/1/22. Spa Serial #000335391. And I have an open call order for you to call us. Editing initial review of 5/7/22. The next morning on 5/8/22 the pump began working on its own when we turned it on. No more E08 error code. Even hotter temps outside than yesterday and all worked just fine now in the hottest part of day with the pump in the direct sun. I do not know why there was a problem with it working upon initial set up on 5/7/22. No one still has called me back from Bestway! Not happy with their customer service. We still need to clarify a few more things with Customer Service. So I changed my initial 2 star rating to 4 star rating because of them not calling us back. We have used the spa twice now (it is Monday 5/9/22). It is working great. We have not done the timer set ups for filter and heat circulation yet, but we did set the temp, and we are just manually turning it on since it is already 95-100 temps here in Tucson. The spa water temp goes down to about 80 at night and if we turn on in the morning, by 1 pm it’s reached about 92 - which is just right as the airjet massagers will lower temp to about 89 after 15 min. Perfect cooling off temperature. Fingers are crossed that all will keep working fine. If Customer Service comes through with a phone call, I’ll edit this review again and give them 5 stars. Bestway finally called us back 4 days later. Of course as above - the pump had begun working on its own and cleared the E08 error by itself after sitting dormant and unplugged for one day. Third edit - review: It is now May 19, 2022 and pump is not working again. The pump had been working great since May 8 when the E08 error cleared by itself…no problems whatsoever. We would circulate and heat it from about 7 a.m. to 1 or 2 p.m. to get it to 93 degrees use it and then turn spa off until next morning when we would repeat the heating and filtering cycle. We did the same yesterday. This morning when we went out to turn it on, there are no lights on (the lock light should have been on and the temperature F displayed). Nope. Only what looked like a 30 number was displayed where temp should display and the red power light was on next to it. No lock light was on, could not run filter, heat or massager. Unplugged, reset spa’s GFI on plug (no reset on this particular pump itself), and still just the 30 and power light displayed on. We now have it completely unplugged and are letting it set for 2 hours as manual said this is one test we can perform on our own. Don’t have much faith it will reset anything. Went on line, yet again, to Bestway site and requested a call back for service request. Very disgusted with this pump. The spa itself is really nice - but you have to have a reliable pump for it to work and be enjoyable! NOT!!!! So I am back to rating this spa 2 stars. If Saluspa can fix this pump or send me a new one and it works for a year or two, I may come back and change my star rating. Not til then! Very disgusted.

Update of: Horrible initial experience with a very satisfied final outcome. This is the original review I wrote and the update is below it: By the time I got my Hawaii hot tub working correctly, God knows I needed to use it to relax my weary mind and body after the hellish circumstances I endured to set up what should have been a no-brainer. In fact, what I ended up with was the upgrade of this spa at about twice the price without paying anything extra, which was the result of fighting a long and painful battle with the company offices in Arizona. Before getting into that, I've read far more positive reviews of the cheaper version than the one I ended up with: the Hydrojet Pro and after several months now of usage, I fail to understand why. The difference between the two is enormous. The navy blue version that I purchased propels bubbles from the perimeter of the bottom of the tub to the surface, which has a nice calming effect, though quite noisy, but in no way approximates the powerful jets of water coming from mid height of the four corners of the tub which is the difference of the gray colored hydrojet pro version. It also alternatively activates the bubble jets of the less expensive model. In the more expensive one there are two jets in each corner and they can be adjusted up or down, in or out. HUGE difference! The nightmare I experienced was due to the fact that the instructions I received are atrocious, not quite the same as those I found online either and they don't directly address the issues of a particular model of the tub. From what I could see, there were two places to screw on and off the two filters provided with the tub but unknown to me, only one was supposed to be used at a time. In the place of what appears to be the second attachment is a plastic connector that is different from the other connector because it has no screws that fit into the filter, whereas the other one does. Both connectors, however, screw into the pipes that go through the wall to the inside of the tub. I called the company I don't know how many times trying to make sense of this, for it was not at all clear in the instructions. What I learned in so doing is that most of the people who answered the phone had no real usage experience and to my chagrin, the company had no technical support. Whether any of this has changed, I cannot say, because I went through the ordeal I am describing last June. First I had to wait in a phone cue that typically last from about 10 to 30 minutes, only to speak to someone who had no clue what I was talking about, no matter how hard I tried to explain it. More than once I insisted on talking to a supervisor and had to wait as long as an entire day for a callback. I ended up waiting days to receive by mail what was supposed to be the connector I needed with the threads to screw on the second filter but I received a completely different part. This is despite the fact that I must have spent 10 minutes explaining exactly what I was talking about to no avail. So, I unscrewed the connector from the tub wall which required using pliers and being plastic, a small dent was put into the threads, which I didn't think would be much of a big deal. I sent a photo to the company and got an incredible runaround, finally demanded speaking to a supervisor who became very angry at me when I mentioned the 2 holes I thought were both for attaching both of the filters, whereby she insisted that there were 3 and she said I had ruined the tub by unscrewing the small connector object. I tried to explain the problem very carefully but she had no patience. "I have worked here for 12 years and know what I am talking about!" she exclaimed and told me to talk to someone else. I was completely shocked. It actually took several weeks and I don't know how many calls before they went through their own bureaucratic procedure of replacing the tub, which they said was damaged by what I did, all because no one who answered the phone knew what I was talking about. Nor did the tub have 3 holes. Nor were the online and paper instructions consistent with each other. Nor did they make clear that only one of the two filters was to be used at once. So, finally, after I too had lost my patience and probably put more than one of their workers through a real emotional workout, I was offered a replacement at no cost. However, I was told, the navy blue tub I had purchased was no longer in stock. Instead I was offered two options: a round version that I didn't want that would be exchanged with the model I had purchased, but I would have to wait until December, OR they would send me for free the much more expensive hydrojet version. Talk of no-brainers. Nightmare over, I could not have ended up happier. All I can say in conclusion is that they have badly needed more precise instructions, which the last supervisor I spoke to confessed is true, there ought to be experienced technical support that one would anticipate from any such company and that the more expensive version with the four corner jets is absolutely worth the investment. My only other issue I might add is that the cover has an inflatable part of the cover of the pool that loses its air quickly, which is something of an inconvenience to contend with. So far I have not noticed any loss of air at all of the tub itself. I have also just noted that the hydra pro-jet version has been jacked up to much more than double the price that was offered at the time. UPDATE Apparently, the price of this item was reduced again after it was more than doubled when I purchased it two years ago. Recently, in its 3rd year of usage during warm weather, it's apparently a lost cause. a plastic pipe from the air compressor that pushes air through the jets cracked and efforts to patch it have been useless. Since then, even when I'm not using the tub, there is a slow water leakage and I am not sure from where. This means having to add water to it daily and then waiting so long to heat it up that it's not worth the effort. In any case, this is not an item that was designed for long lasting use, but what can one expect from an inflatable hot tub?

Won’t heat up and pump looks used. This hot tub is very sturdy and was easy to put together. But I do not think the pump is new because it is discolored yellow, which I was willing to overlook as long as it worked as it should. But it does not, it is not heating past 91° even though I have it set at 104°. Best way customer service is not easy to get hold of because all you can do is request a call back, there’s no number to call them or email address even in this day and age that’s very disappointing. Hopefully they rectify this situation in a timely manner so I’m not sitting with a $700 tepid pool. UPDATE- I finally got the heater to start working. I have no idea how. I am still waiting for a call back from bestway Cust service. Been waiting 5 days with no call back. I still think this pump was used when it was sent to us. 2nd update - finally got a call back from bestway on May 27th. They left a message and I tried to call them back today May 31st. I have been holding for a long time.

Very slow to heat up. Very slow to heat up. The heater is way too small for the tub.

Great Hot tub make sure you know everything!! UPDATED REVIEW 1. Great easy hot tub. 2 VM Express was not helpful with my issue. When you order this call them and make sure you are getting the NEW gray pump. Not the blue egg shaped pump. That pump shuts off every 72 hours!! You can not bypass this and they DO NOT TELL YOU THIS in all of the information. "Convenient 72 hour timer" does not mean "your pump shuts off every 72 hours"! It took a while to figure out what was going on, thinking our plug was overloaded and then that is was getting tripped by power flickers in our winter storms. When I called Bestway they said there were many unhappy people with this so they revamped the pump but I needed to deal with VM Express as that is who I bought it from. I called VM Express and they first told me they would replace it with the new style as I pointed out the sales sight was misleading and did not provide all information needed to understand what you were buying. They sent the same pump! When I called back to get it fixed they said "sorry, it is out of the 30 day warranty window" and would not come up with any solution to rectify the problem. I have worked in customer service for 30 years, if we made a mistake in our advertising we honored it and then fixed the problem so we would not have the issue anymore. They still have not fixed the mis information on this site so BUYER BE WARE, make sure you are getting the NEW PUMP STYLE. Blow up hot tub get s 5 stars, overall it is getting 3 due to these issues.

A. I bought it in January and it stopped working in September. Is this normal,is this the life of the product?
