Pros & Cons

Pros

Excellent Switch port. This is a top tier port of a PS4 game onto the Switch. I loved this game when I originally picked it up on the PS4, I enjoyed playing it on Xbox One while the game was available on Xbox Game Pass and I immediately went to Amazon and pre-ordered it as soon as I knew it was being ported over to Switch although I was a bit worried that due to the hardware limitations of the Switch it might be a compromised version of one of my favorite games. I'm happy to report that the game is fully intact with this port and it runs silky smooth on Switch with the caveat that there were a few compromises made here and there with the graphics, I don't think the textures are quite as high res as they were I mean there's no discernable downgrade it's not all fuzzy and blurry like how the Witcher 3 port was made just some slight downgrades to textures here and there. There is also no more 60fps which is my biggest disappointment apparently this decision was made to sacrifice frame rate in order to keep the game locked at 1080p 30fps (while docked) which I at least would have liked the option to run the game at 60fps while in 720p in handheld mode, minor gripe very minor but it's still a gripe. The game is still snappy with zippy slashy sci-fi samurai sword play and teleporty dodging chaotic shooting android killing machine goodness with tons of particle effects and tons of stuff going on at the same time I've not noticed any slowdown or the game struggling to maintain it's frame rate or render in game cutscenes so this is definitely one of the best looking games you're going to find on Switch now as far as what can be achieved with this hardware. I've only played the game in handheld mode on my Switch OLED so I can't comment too much on the sound here given that it was all being pumped out by the tiny little built in speakers. But I did notice some really weird sound levels here and there. Especially when visiting the factory area that could just be me being used to hearing this game on a 7.1 surround sound setup though. I won't really attempt to review this game and it's story because I think that would just be an exercise in futility. What I can say is that if you enjoy games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Rising, then you'll probably enjoy this game and all it's quickness. Even if you don't like any of the games I mentioned I'm sure you'll get hooked into this game once you give it a chance, that's what happened to me. Honorable mention; this game has the greatest video game soundtrack ever recorded.

A True Action Adventure Masterpiece. The critically acclaimed Nier Automata finally arrives on Switch and I'm happy to report it looks and runs amazingly! This is a character action game similar to Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, where you play as Android 2B. Without spoilers, you are sent to the now desolate Earth, controlled by the machines. Who are these machines? Where did they come from? What is life? What is love? Nier Automata has one of the best stories for an action adventure game I've ever played. The visuals are truly striking with many different locations and environments to fight and explore in, which range from city ruins, mysterious forests, a vast, dune filled desert, even an Amusement Park and more! The music is equally impressive with many tracks that feature hauntingly beautiful vocals...or riffs that get your blood pumping in one of the many mind bending, pulse pounding boss fights. Nier Automata: End of the YoRHa Edition is truly one of the best games to find its way on Switch, and would be an excellent addition to your Switch library. This is how Switch ports should be done. Glory to mankind!

Roller coaster of emotions and addicting. I like everything about it! Story: Roller coaster of emotions but worth it. Music: Makes you chill and fall asleep but on boss fights, your heart rate and blood pressure goes up in a good way. Graphics: Its like watching HD anime I'm happy its on the switch now so I can bring it anywhere.

NieR is top TieR. NieR Replicant/Gestalt and Automata are the greatest games of all time. 10/10. What's that? "Muh framerate downgrade, unplayable at 30 fps" shut up. Dumbo. Shut up. One of a kind melding of narrative and gameplay where the very act of participating in the playing of the game, enjoying the fantastic combat, is thematically resonant with the core (and very subversive) ideas of the game. Could only be told as a game, wouldn't be as perfect without Yoko Taro, Keiichi Okabe, Takahisa Taura, and many more prolific and outstanding talents that all contributed to this most perfect of alchemical concoctions. They turned a long sequence of 1s and 0s into gold. Switch version adds cute costumes. And fox masks. No notes.

This is witchcraft. This is absolutely one of those "impossible ports" on the Switch. I played the PS4 version at launch 2017, and it didn't run at a solid frame rate then. Granted that was shooting for 60fps, while this version is 30fps, but this version seems to run smoother at times because of more consistent frame pacing. Some of the graphics are scaled back a bit, but in docked mode this version runs at a higher resolution than it did on PS4, which is significantly more powerful. I'm having a blast playing through again on my OLED Switch, and can easily recommend this to anyone interested. Excellent port by the team at Virtuous, and great game all around. Also, the soundtrack is exceptional!

Action RPG Fans (Like Me) Will Love It. I'm not familiar with this series, but you don't really need to be. This is easily one of the best games I've played in 2022, and I think any action RPG fan will appreciate it as well. Plus the full game is on it, which is a bonus for me. Though there is a small update you'll want to do before you play it for the first time.

Cons

Great story ruined by technical bugs. I just finished the entire game (all endings) and I don’t see any other reviews talk about this but there’s a lot of bugs in this game- even after I downloaded an update a few days ago. These include: 1) the game freezing when trying to load a cutscene, forcing you to restart. This happened more than once, and on one occasion I had to re-do an entire boss fight. There is nothing worse than having to redo like 30 min of gameplay due to something out of your control. 2) pop in everywhere! Entire buildings will just pop in. Graphically this looks like a PS3 game so I’m not sure why the draw distance is so poor. 3) wonky cameras during battle. Sometimes it felts like the camera had a mind of its own! No matter how many times i tried to keep it still, it would flail around. There were a few times i just wanted to rage quit because of how annoying the camera was. 4) a few times where the character model got stuck. 5) not a bug, but there are way too many invisible walls in this game. Places that look like they should be easily accessible will just straight up not let you go to them. I give this game a 3 still because the story and music is absolutely incredible, but I can’t give it 5 because of how frustrating the bugs were.

Dying over and over again in the least fun way, the video game. Gameplay is terrible, not going to lie. But I do love the story, worldbuilding, music, and characters. Wish I just watched a Lets Play for the game though since it really isn't worth your money in the long run. Be prepared to die frequently on just even normal difficulty.
