NUC NUC NUC. Okay, I've had a few days to get to know NUC NUC (homage to 3 Stooges) and have a few thoughts. Grand Box Opening: reverently lifted the precious black jewel out of its jewel box, held it at arm's length on my palm and, enraptured, was immediately, astoundingly, transported back to the grand opening night of 2001 A Space Odyssey several short decades ago. This was it: the black monolith. The film finally resolved. Next unit of computing, indeed. Three years ago my 20 20 eyes met 2020. Eye fatigue from a 17" screen had made my laptop a torture device and all but useless. 30 minute stretches was it - not good for an info-junkie. Twas time for a change and a 27" monitor proved a partial remedy -- a wonderful 4 hours until eye fatigue, so I got two more. Sensing a pattern, I plugged the now-desktop laptop into a mostly-ignored 55" cheapo 4k tv, which was instant bliss -- could now browse and read for 16 straight hours, painlessly. No pain is gain. The set-up eventually became an (upgraded) tv at 8', and two HD monitors at each side at 3' (not for claustrophobes). Squeezing every possible pixel out of the laptop/desktop with an assortment of adapters finally took its toll, which brings us back to NUC NUC. I didn't know that mini PC's even existed until a couple years ago, but was thinking that somebody really needs to build a laptop without a screen and a keyboard, and with enough pop to drive a whole bunch of cheap 4k TV's. But as I was browsing giant desktops with disgusting flashing lights and menacing red eyes, I actually searched to see if anyone was actually making a laptop without a screen and keyboard. Actually, yes, everyone was building them. But the techies were all buzzing about a company called NUC (whaa?). Good enough for me. I settled on this particular NUC model a year ago then sat back and waited and hoped for the price to come down. And here we are: Geek+ and a very lovely price. I be happy. Have begun remodeling my cave to accommodate four big screens in a 2x2 grid each center-screen-sighted on my recliner from 8' away. Happy eyes. Happy screen real estate. Cathy in Geek+ Support has been wonderful -- answering my dumb questions immediately and providing documents on configurations for four 4k screens (at 60hz no less). My dream machine has arrived and the black monolith is just around the spacetime bend. (oh, and 5 stars, too)
Small footprint. This is my 2nd NUC. I looked around for a bit to find something not bleeding edge but solid tech more than what I had which is now 5 years old. Intel is lagging behind in technology compared with other chip manufacturers but I really love this complete computer in such a small footprint. You can drive four monitors with this. I only use this for work (i.e. business and surfing the web). I do use it for streaming video and find that the CPU usage is very low. This thing has 8 cores (probably virtual). I think the price is a bit high at over $600. I'm thinking it should be below $500.
This aa fantastic little computer. I did a lot of research before buying this mini-PC, and I am more impressed than I thought I would be. You add your own memory and drives, and the end performance of this PC will vary depending on how you equip it, but with two 8GB DDR4-3200 (16GB total) and a Western Digital Black SN850 drive, this little computer is FAST! Gaming on it is good enough. You're not going to be playing high end games on high end graphics settings with this, but if you're reasonable, you can have a lot of fun. (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on low- to much settings works fine. Rocket League turned all the way up if super fast (sure, not a very graphics-intensive game... just giving examples). One note on NVMe drives. This takes a 2280 size, which is common. But, it will not accommodate a drive with a heatsink. This is because the case of this mini-PC has a built-in heat transfer pad on the case, and comes into direct contact with the drive. Essentially, the case is the heatsink, so no heatsink on the drive is required.
Love the price and performance. Thanks Cathy from seller GEEK+. The media could not be loaded. I am a I.T. professional and purchased 60 units of NUCs for my office about two months ago and am impressed. These NUCs worked like a champ right out the box. Just plugged it in, ran through the upgrade process for Win11 and everything works. It boots up in about 10 seconds which was surprising to be honest. Thanks excellent seller Geek+ Computer Mall, sales representative Ms. Cathy quickly answered some questions I had and went the extra mile to see I was satisfied. Highly recommended seller.
GEEK team very helpful and INTEL NUC is awesome! This is the 3rd Intel NUC I have owned, and I love my mini PCs. I travel a lot and I don't like how difficult it is to repair and work on laptops. I love the NUCs for their simplicity, 4 screws and the shell is apart, snap in your hard drives and RAM and you're up and running in no time at all. I highly recommend a mini PC for travelers, and the Intel NUC from the GEEK team is a well-priced option worth considering.
Great Product even better support. Fast shipping and the NUC is amazing.. Pictured next to my QNAP storage bay, it's actually increased my hard drive access speeds from 30-40 meg to 200! Must have been old usb drivers or ports on my old large 1700x server. Super small, fast, rocking as a media Server. Also emailed support the first day I got it with a question about a cable inside the unit.. Support responded that day with a quick and precise answer.. Really blew me away!
Cons
The Intel NUCs just keep getting worse. These things used to be great, the go-to desktop system for the office. Over the past four years I've bought about 20 of them, and every generation they get more painful to use. Spontaneous shutdown issues, no audio over HDMI without Intel's highly-suspect patch, and no multi-display support unless you're running Windows
Little office PC. Flashkey.exe Issue upon startup. Not sure about the who, what, where and why this is coming up but its down right irritating! Other than that its a good little PC. I'll update if anything transpires. Update! I was contacted by a representative. They have good customer service and I was given a resolution, all I had to do was go to - Startup file and delete oa.bat file. Issue resolved. UPDATE OMG this thing is the worst PC i have ever bought! use it to Access email and whatever but don't give it too much to do at once. PLUS i have to mention the start up problems are most frustrating it wont wake like a regular PC there's some problem with the software. The only way around it is to cut the power and then turn it on. Or you can never let it sleep or turn it off. No way could you run a Business with NUC Business. That is unless you only spend your time checking your mail. :-)
Unreliable, unresponsive service. Bought this to replace another, cheaper computer after its power failed. But the NUC's hard drive failed after only 6 months of use. GEEK+ customer service sent me to Intel who sent make to GEEK+, who has since ignored me. In the meantime, it took them 8 weeks, but the other computers manufacturer (Beelink) honored their warranty and fixed it free of charge, whilst the NUC remains a useless brick on my desk.
