Pros & Cons

Pros

Nice Little Echo Show…. After a bad experience with an Echo Show 8, I ordered this one to replace an older gen 1 Show 5 that had stopped working after a recent update. I tried the size 8 Echo show and did not care for the settings etc., but this smaller size 5 is a lot closer to what the gen 1 show 5 had been. The voice and sound is clearer, and the screen is following my settings much much better than the 8 did. I am listening to a news brief right now and it is clear and easy to understand. I was able to choose my background and unlike the size 8 show, it has stayed in place and isn't constantly trying to rotate ads and other pictures onto the screen. There is no giant clock on the screen that you cant remove, which was a major issue for me on the show 8. Instead the clock is in the upper left corner, big enough for me to see but not overwhelming the screen. This one does have a screen sleep type feature that darkened the face and turned the little clock numbers dark red last night. I would still prefer my background wallpaper to remain but the dimmed sleep setting was not so obnoxious as it was on the size 8 where the clock just would never go away and was super bright. I needed a tool to use, and am not looking for something to focus on in my room - something that responds when I ask and does not bother me unless I ask. After turning off all the ads and rotation junk, this smaller Show is not nagging me so much, as the size 8 - which simply refused to keep the settings I wanted. I do not care for the updated Alexa app on my Ipad, but instead used an older app version on an older Ipad to back up my on screen settings for this new Show 5- some choices have disappeared on the newer app which make it harder to get what I want on my Echo Show. For me having choices to make setting decisions on the device is important- and the older app gives me a bit more of that for this device. I did find the on screen touch choices to be different slightly than on the size 8, and again, they actually seem to be working… ie,.. when turned off they are staying off. Suggestion to developers for these devices is to reduce the ad cycling and nag screens, or offer an ad free or nag free device option with a different price point. I do not have time to stop and read an ad or suggestion that rotates onto the screen - nor do I want to see some morning routine idea that Someone dreamed up and added to the software for the device. I would gladly pay more for one that left those things in the developers garage… But- This little Show 5 is just enough of a voice activated tool to be helpful and not drive me crazy- it links to my ring doorbell and tells me where my packages are, plays a song if I ask, can tell the weather or give me the news when asked. It is small enough to not overwhelm and fits on the hallway cabinet where it can be summoned by voice if needed, or ignored. Good deal on what I needed and almost as nice as my 1st gen. Show 5.

Owned it for 2 months, 2 weeks so far. Purposely, I waited to review to be sure to be fair, address every possible issue and give me and my new, "Echo Show", time to adjust to each other. (Echo Show 5, 2nd Gen, 2021 release,| Smart display with Alexa and 2 MP camera~ Charcoal). So much to love. I added it to my Alexa App on my phone and gave it a name. If I said "Alexa", all the other Alexas in my house had something to say. So, after a few days, I renamed it, "Echo". After a few weeks test-run, it was apparent, Echo could not hear me oftentimes. Changed name next to "Amazon". Seems somewhat better now. I think it needs 3 syllables to hear the "wake word", but that is only my opinion. Anyway, I use this Echo show", only in the office, sometimes to watch news show or youtube videos. Its fun to play games with an Echo SHow product. The kids love, "Are you smarter than a fifth-grader?", Its lots of family fun. The pictures from my phone circulate over the hours and days and that's pretty wonderful.WHO KNEW, that I have 1604 photos! Im seeing picture from 7 years ago. Its actually a nice surprise to see such older photos! It may shut down, "off", or just drop your show you are watcihing, and you have to use the wake word again and say, "Amazon. Youtube". Then find your show again. Sometimes you say the wake word over and over and nothing hapens. no recognition. Something else to report is that you can set a few preferences with your Echo Show, which I have done and like a lot, Recipes, and news shows, randomly, may pop up visually, and it invites you to ask, "Whats the story?", and that feature works pretty well. I like it ok, just enough to want a better quality "Echo Show". Ill be shopping around to try a different one out soon., hoping to get a less glitchy product, but still, overall, appreciating this one, because its my first "ECHO SHOW". Its a fantastic concept, and I will always have at least one in my home.

Works great for what I use it for. This is my third Echo device. I have a 2nd generation dot, 4th generation dot and now this. The oldest of the group is in our basement and the 4th gen is in our livingroom. I got this for our kitchen because when I'm cooking or cleaning and need to add something to the shopping list, Alexa can't always hear me unless I shout. I also wanted to be able to play music or stream a show while tooling around in the kitchen but needed something small. This is pretty perfect. It was super easy to set up. Like, suuuuuper easy. I literally didn't have to do anything other than plug it in. I didn't even have to add my wifi password. She did it all and the connection was lightning fast. I didn't buy a stand for it but it fits just fine where I set it. It's not wobbly or unstable. I watched a show while cooking and the resolution was decent enough for that. I played some music from my Sirius XM and it sounded pretty good. Not stereo like quality of course but not bad either. I don't use my echos for phone calls so I can't say how well that works. I also haven't used the camera on this one, nor do I really have any immediate plans to, so I can't attest to that either. I honestly use these mostly to control lights throughout the house as well as the TVs, create shopping lists, set reminders and timers, ask about the weather and use for entertainment purposes. Speaking of entertainment, the only issue I have had with it is that it won't open Netflix. Even when I ask her to, she'll say she did, but nothing happens. I haven't played around with it to see what the problem is yet but it did just fine opening Amazon Prime (of course) as well as Tubi. I was also able to open my YouTube TV via the internet and scroll through the live guide. I picked one of their nature options for the screensaver and the photos are nice, although you do get news bits and Alexa tips inbetween. Not a big deal for me. So far, I really like the Show and considering the deal I got on it, can't really complain either. I am considering getting another one (maybe the 8) to replace the old echo dot (that still works really well actually) we have in the basement.

Bluetooth only for external speakers, no Bluetooth supported for multi-room audio. I have a few Echo Dots, most connected to external speakers with the 3.5mm aux out. I have a bunch of random old speakers and such, this works exceptionally well around the house with room groups and everything. I had an older Echo Show 5 at my old place that I didn't get to take with me and I liked how it would show lyrics to songs when streaming. I wanted this at my desk in my office. Bought one, went to connect it up... no 3.5mm audio out. Of course, my fault as I didn't look to see if it had one, I'm not complaining about that. It supports Bluetooth, great! Except as soon as you go to use multi-room audio it disconnects Bluetooth. This is not-un-common knowledge, but not exactly common knowledge unless you've dealt with it. I get it, some Bluetooth speakers may have a delay and that can cause different rooms to not be synced, and I'm sure that's a support and review headache that's more about external devices than the Echo, itself... but, I will blame Amazon for their design decision to drop the 3.5mm audio output which was the fallback to make external speakers work with multi-room audio. This, in my opinion, is a very poor design decision. Pretty sad about this and I certainly wouldn't have bought it if I realized this issue. I guess I'm going back to a Dot for my desk.

I love the lyrics for the music. My number one favorite feature is the lyrics for the music. That is what I mainly use it for. I do not like the fact you tell me certain songs I cannot play on there unless I have a subscription. We pay for Amazon prime and have been a customer for over 15 years. Please add a feature to stop you from advertising playing movies on it. That’s the last thing I wanna see is advertisements for movies. I see that enough on TV. Let us customize it to our liking. I did try and order something to put in my Amazon cart and it didn’t work the first time and I did not try again yet. Sometimes Alexa will not cancel what is playing so I have to unplug it. It’s not often, but it has happened a few times. So honestly it should be 3 1/2 stars based on some issues. I hope you move towards improvements instead of like Google who offer less as time goes on. Ads are out of control right now. I have yet to sync it with my blink cameras. I am hoping that that is a success.

Great little smart device. We already had 2 echo dots in our household & I decided to try the show show 5 a chance since it recently dropped in price. I wanted an additional unit for my new hone office & it didn't disappoint. I read a previous review complaining about the size of the display. It's 5inches, hence the name, echo show 5. It's a good size display that sits on my desk next to my computer. Sure, it could be better picture quality but I don't think people are getting this device to watch HD movies, or at least I don't think they are. The sound quality is more than acceptable taking the device & hardware it has. I did have to mess with the sound settings to get the best sound but it got there. It's definitely loud enough but I do have it in just a small office. As far as the device being slow, I feel like it could be dependent on your network setup. I don't have the best ISP but I've had no issues with anything loading, buffering or slow transitions between screens or applications. I've had the device for 2 weeks now &I don't really have any complaints.

Cons

I wanted this to be good, but it just wasn’t. OK I’ll try to keep this short. The last review I posted on this item was not shown, or if it was shown, I searched and could not find it. After posting a negative review I was contacted by Amazon. Mind you, I returned this item almost a month ago. I reviewed this item and two days later Amazon called and left me two voice messages. I was not available, nor did I get the messages. I was actually in the shower so I had no idea someone had reached out to me. Upon exiting the shower they called me again. I heard the phone so I answered it. I didn’t realize that they had left two messages until I got off the phone with them and saw that there were two messages from the same gentleman about 10 minutes before I spoke with them. The man from Amazon never told me that he left two messages so I thought it was kind of weird as that has never happened to me. As I said, he was very polite and wanted to see if he could do anything to help with the product. So, obviously, the review was seen, the review was responded to, but the review was never posted. I know it is not this gentleman’s fault by any way, shape or form but it would’ve been nice to have someone contact me when I was returning the item because quite possibly some thing could have been done and maybe I had a bad unit. Like, instead of calling me, after I leave a bad review, they could’ve called when they saw the item being returned. I will never know. I’m trying to give Amazon the benefit of the doubt and to say that they actually were reaching out to me to try to see what was going on with this particular unit BUT we will never know. This is not an attempt to attack Amazon in any way It’s just a very confusing situation. So, I will say this about the unit. It is small. It is 5 inches so don’t expect anything much larger than your cell phone. For being so small, it is slightly bulky and unless you have a stand for it, it really doesn’t sit too perfectly on a table. Especially, if you want to turn the unit to face you or face another area in the room. You can compare it to a cell phone but it does not have the resolution that a cell phone has. Maybe the resolution of an older cell phone from say 2011. I am trying to guesstimate. The resolution isn’t putrid, but it’s certainly not worth watching anything more than a commercial or something like that on it. Like I said, the best use would be for a quick video, chat, quickly, watching your animals or children, while you’re away from home, or in another room, maybe looking up a recipe, or if your unit doesn’t glitch out, maybe playing a goofy game. Unfortunately, none of these things worked for me. The audio clipped, and sounded terrible, even when I used the equalizer, and had it hooked up with three other Amazon devices. The photos it took were grainy and not very good. The video was kind of a joke to me because it glitched out so much and really if you needed video of someone doing something bad in your home, this would not be the device to pick that up. Unless you buy a battery pack, you really can’t sit with this thing on your lap and watch a movie. I don’t know or remember if there is a headphone out Jack. That would be a plus if there were a headphone out jack that way you could privately have a conversation with someone or watch a television show (which would probably be much better just using your cell phone lol). As what all the echo devices are doing now, this device has a white cords which powers them up and if the devices are either gray or black, you’re pretty much stuck to the white cord, which looks ridiculous if you’re trying to seamlessly integrate with your living room, or any other room in the house that you don’t want a giant white cord sticking out of. Maybe, the 8 inch version is better. I don’t know cause I’ve never tried it, but I would definitely stay away from the 5 inch version and make sure you have a blazing Internet connection because I have a darn fast, Internet connection and even testing at a foot away from my modem, it still glitched out. I would love to suggest this during Prime days if you also got a free plug or something with it, but in good conscience, I can’t really suggest this item. Maybe, if you desperately need a monitor and you’re not using the internal camera, this could be decent. Or, you can just use your phone as the monitor to your cameras and basically bypass an over priced digital alarm clock. Pros- Alarm clock Looks decent Camera shutter cover Easy to set up Cons- Poor audio Bad connection Poor camera Poor video White cord Freezes a lot

Not bad, but a few annoyances, especially "Alexa for Your Day" I've been toying with the idea of getting one of these for a while, and when a Ring Floodlight Cam bundle went on sale, including this Echo Show 5 for only $10 more, I snagged it. We have an Echo Show 8 elsewhere in the house, and this smaller one is perfect for keeping on my desktop. The screen quality is fine, and I like that I can ask to see any of my Ring cameras. It can also automatically switch to a Ring camera when a person is detected. Otherwise, I keep it on a slideshow of photographs that I uploaded to Amazon Photos. By far my biggest complaint is the forced insertion of "Alexa for Your Day" pages (which give tips on different things you can do with Alexa) in the rotation. In the settings, you can enable/disable almost all of the various options for information that is cycled through on the screen, but for some inexplicable reason, "Alexa for Your Day" is not one of them... there's nothing you can do to stop showing these. I understand having this kind of thing enabled by default (to help new users discover more about the device), but it's totally obnoxious to force these pages into the rotation with no ability to disable them. I'm sorry, Amazon, but I have ZERO interest in the puzzle of the day or doing a workout with you, and I get extremely aggravated when the flow of family photos is interrupted by one of these pages. Hopefully this is just an oversight, and the option to hide these will be added to the settings. My only other issue with it is that it takes 4-5 seconds for a Ring camera to display once it is requested (it shows "Waiting for Ring.com..." on the screen). To be fair, even within the Ring app on the iPhone, it's not instantaneous once you tap on a camera, it's only 1-2 seconds before the view appears. It would be nice if Amazon could optimize the Echo Show's connectivity to Ring's systems (particularly since Ring is owned by Amazon) to display cameras more quickly.

Good device, needs more. Great for communication & controlling smart home devices if you have any, but it's missing features. For some reason, however, the device only has 4 built-in TV apps; Netflix, Prime Video, Red Bull TV (why), & Tubi. Would be great if it had more (Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, heck even Disney+) It has YouTube, but not the app. When you launch YouTube, it launches it within the device's internet browser. Same with TikTok, if that's your thing. Drives me nuts using the YouTube mobile website UI. The device also doesn't have any sort of built-in App Store, so there isn't much outside developer innovation that you get with other devices. A simple Google search on that question dances around the question. I set an alarm on it yesterday (same as I've been doing since I got it), and Alexa says "Also, you can now purchase a super loud alarm sound." THAT'S what really grinds my gears. I don't care if you guys sell alarm clock sounds, but I do not want to hear about that. Set my alarm & don't upsell me for an alarm clock feature. The speakers on the device are amazing. The bass is great & the sound is extremely clear for the price. It also has much better audio control settings than most devices I've used. You can change the bass, treble, or mid to maximize your sound experience. Playing 3 Card Poker & Blackjack on it is pretty fun--I just wish there was an app store that allowed outside developers to contribute & add their products. Allowing other developers to add content is (unsurprisingly) how you get more content on your device.

It’s okay. Microphones on nearly all echo devices are to be desired; we have to repeat ourselves like broken records all too often. Speaker is okay.and goes downhill from there on most of the small echo’s; the older generation devices were better actually with regard to microphones and speakers. We’ve had much better luck with the older generations and the larger new generations such as the pluses and the show 10’s. The screens vacillate in quality with regard to touch from under responsive to over responsive on the show 5’s, and you can’t touch the screens with ease on the show 10’s as the screen has to be touched hard enough that you need your other hand to hold the screen still so that a touch will register at which point you’ll get an error report that the motion has been disabled because the screen has “bumped into something” or that “lighting conditions are too low” because you’re now on top of the thing to stabilize it so you can use the touch screen function. And on the show 5’s, if they’re on a standard counter or dresser top without a stand and you’re using the camera functions you’ll be staring at the ceiling if you’re on the other end…. Did someone not realize this before production? On the show 10’s the things practically has to look at you sideways as if looking at you with one of the other eye; the better of an eye or as if in question and one has a sideways glance toward you as you’re speaking. Could be cute, but largely annoying. I’ve said befoe and I’ll say it again, having bought 20 some odd devices over time, I really wish Amazon would focus on stepped up ai development, quality control and fix what they already have before churning out more junk. Further, I’ve had one of my devices usurped and registered fo an unoccupied house a quarter mile away which was now being occupied by someone, apparently, and they had infiltrated my house Alexa’s and ring system here at the house over Christmas week. Amazon nor Ring could tell me on what date and time that that address appeared on my account. Neither was of any help; Oddly, it was Apple and Verizon, who had nothing to do with the breach, who helped me clean up the mess with instructions on what to address and change first with regard to passwords for accounts, routers, devices and apps, etc. I wish there was a regulating agency with clout that would come down hard on Amazon and Ring and make them accountable and culpable; because as it stands, when you have a problem with regard to security, and you will, you’re met with near complete apathy at every turn. I felt like I was on another planet. But, like I said, Apple checked out what they could, and then Verizon security department did; while both more helpful than Amazon and Ring by far, it was Verizon that was on the phone with me for a couple hours cleaning up the mess… Verizon went above and beyond on an issue that ultimately had nothing to do with them. Amazon and Ring should hang their heads in shame. They were miserable. Just mentioning it here is making me angry all over again. Unfortunately, I have too much invested already with these clowns. Stick with the known names, ADT, Google, etc. Run while you can. There, I said it. Money hungry creeps that won’t let the minions on the lower levels of customer service think outside the box or deliver anything but canned responses, not unlike Alexa’s “I don’t know that one.” Wtf

Only plus is viewing Ring doorbell cam. I really think the only thing that makes this more useful than any of the non screen echos is viewing Ring cameras. Most of the time the screen is annoying, displaying something like BTS is the most listened to band on Amazon. I Don't Care. It's recommendations are way off and almost never apply to me. At least an echo Dot isn't constantly advertising to me 24/7. When I go to bed I tell the screen to turn off so I can sleep. If I use the alarm for some reason the screen comes on fifteen minutes before the alarm goes off. I absolutly Hate that. The speaker it has isn't good enough that I would ever listen to music through it. If I ever find another use for this thing I will update my review. I would not recommend any of the Echo (5, 8 10, or the big one) to a friend or family member.

Echo Show 5 is cute and a good size for a kitchen. I have had the echoes for a couple of years now, but I have the first generation hockey puck style, and then I have the second generation what I called softball style. I was intrigued by the fact that these ones had a screen, and I wanted to give it a try when I saw that the refurbished ones were inexpensive was just a $35 price point. It was worth a shot. When I discovered that they can play videos on them and they can double as a home security system, I was sold. Then I found out about the echo show eight and the echo show 10 and the echo show 15. Due to limited funds. I’ve only been able to get up to the echo show eight but the more screen the better. Yeah cause your five doesn’t have amazing sound, but it has OK sound but if you looking to play your music through this pay a little bit of extra money and get the echo show eight or echo show 10.
