Pros & Cons

Pros

Great 4K upgrade over past models. An important hidden menu can solve HDR connection problems. The Roku Premiere+ 4K UHD Streaming Media Player is identical to the ROKU Ultra in all respects except for the lack of both the digital audio optical output and USB port included in the ROKU Ultra. Unless you seriously think you will need either of those two options then the ROKU Premiere+ is the way to go. But don't be confused by the descriptions of the ROKU Premiere+ and the lesser ROKU Premiere. The ROKU Premiere does not support HDR whereas the ROKU Premiere+ does. That plus sign means a lot. The ROKU Premiere+ is probably my tenth or more ROKU player over the years. I was an early adopter way back in the first days of streaming video. At every iteration of streaming video technology there have been player upgrades, but also an increase in complexity of standards and the various moving parts of the whole server to screen system of getting video to the end user. Glitches and problems have been inevitable as each generation of standards and technology has been rolled out by multiple players. Although there have been complaints along the way ROKU has thrived because at the end of the day they keep making great players with a great interface a huge selection of programming and they always get it right, eventually. My prior ROKU model was the ROKU 4. I was very happy with the ROKU 4. So why did I upgrade, and should you consider upgrading also? The simple answer: HDR. There are some other hardware reasons that are evolutionary. But the real reason is HDR. What, you don't have HDR and don't care? You will. It's always easy to dismiss a new standard as unnecessary and humble brag how you are happy with your current setup and don't see the point. But, like it or not, the future of TV and video, streaming and disc, is HDR. I won't go into all the reasons that HDR is important, that's covered all over the place by people reviewing TV sets. Let's just say that HDR is the other half of the 4K revolution and you will not truly enjoy the benefits of 4K until you have a 4K HDR TV with a 10 bit panel and full HDR10 support with HDR sources. There is at present, in spring 2017, hardly any HDR streaming content available on-line. Amazon, for one, is streaming its own Amazon Originals content in 4K HDR. I am a fan of Amazon's series BOSCH. My ROKU 4 had partially supported 4K 10 bit monitors but had not fully implemented full HDR10 support. The stream via my ROKU 4 had looked pretty good on my Samsung KS8000 SUHD set. But watching the 4K HDR 60 fps stream of BOSCH via the ROKU Premiere+ was a significant upgrade in tonal quality and surface textures, and thus apparent realism, over the prior 4K UHD non HDR stream that I had with the ROKU 4. If you are having problems with 4K and HDR picture drop outs or other connection problems when the ROKU Premiere+ is set in "Settings/Display" to enable 4K HDR, and you are absolutely sure of your cables and connections, a VERY IMPORTANT THING to understand is that both the ROKU Ultra and ROKU Premiere+ default to output HDR in 4:2:2 color mode. It may be that some HDR compatible TV sets, expecting HDR10 4:2:0 color space data, may not smoothly handle a 4:2:2 stream, or something about the transition may affect the HDCP handshake or mode. Also, a 4:2:2 stream requires more bandwidth and may place a greater demand on your connection cables. The answer to this is to access a special hidden menu by, on the remote, hitting HOME HOME HOME HOME HOME DOWN LEFT UP UP UP in rapid sequence. This will bring up a "secret" screen that will allow you to switch from 4:2:2 color to 4:2:0 color. This usually solves most compatibility and HDCP problems in HDR mode. You have to have your ROKU display options set to 4K HDR mode for this screen to work. The main differences in hardware for the ROKU Premiere+ over the ROKU 4 are that it is about 50% smaller, runs much much cooler, it's barely warm to the touch, and otherwise has almost exactly the same interface. Get all your HDR video ducks in a row because within the year HDR will be much more widely available, HDR sets will be much more the norm rather than a high end choice. I purchased a ROKU Premiere+ certified refurb to save a few bucks. Except for arriving in a brown box instead of a retail box, and having an annoying "B Stock" sticker on the back that was hard to get off, I have no complaints with the refurb unit. I am enthusiastic about the latest generation of ROKU HDR players. RECOMMENDED.

Tips, pros and cons and excellent refurbished ! I am so happy we purchased this for our home. We cut the cable cord, and use Netflix, HuLu,Vudu, and some extra channels to watch on demand (I gotta have American Horror story every Tuesday!) And use an antenna for local channels. This is all we need. I highly recommend downloading vudu to your Roku, there's a ton of movies for free, and some you can pay for to rent or watch like Apple tv. There's an excellent selection of horror movies on vudu as well. Was skeptical about buying a refurbished electronic device but was extremely pleased upon opening the package. It looked brand-new, and came with fresh batteries . All you need which is not included , is a basic HDMI cable. It's extremely easy, turn your tv to HDMI source and voila! It's there. I have two very minor negative comments to make, 1. Since this was refurbished , when I plugged it in to the tv, it was still connected to someone's account. Their apps were there, name, Email, and probably more but I immediately checked YouTube to learn how to sign them out. You need to do a factory reset and you'll start fresh. So anybody who is selling one, be sure to do a factory reset unless you want someone to have access to your account and the possibility to make purchases! Second thing i would like to mention is the awesome headphone jack into the remote kills batteries quickly. Everyone has told me to get rechargeable batteries. Makes sense. I found this out the hard way by falling asleep twice with headphones in. 2 full batteries lasted 2 days. Now I've learned my lesson, they last about a week with me watching tv late after my partner goes to sleep. These minor details don't affect the 5 stars. I also recommend downloading Pluto TV. There is a huge selection of free movies, as well as regular live shows. I watch the cooking channel which has old iron chef reruns and other cool cooling shows, lots of music channels, a whole channel of fear factor re runs 24/7. Its truly a great free app! Live News channels as well like CNBC. Hope this review helps you see the pros and cons of getting a Roku, and the pros of buying from this seller. I would have thought this was brand new when it arrived. Photo is from the app Pluto TV on Roku Premiere , it shows the tv guide which goes to full screen by pressing a button. Excellent, came late because of labor day but that is unavoidable. Enjoy!

arrived in as new condition... The player looked brand new and came with a headset and remote in equally prime condition. The only indication of not being brand new was a B-Stock sticker on the side. I initially had some issues with the image on the LCD flickering and having occasional snow. This turned out to be a bad HDMI cable as after replacing it with a known good one all interference issues disappeared. Both in 1080P and 4K. I found out my HTR is not new enough to support the 2.2 copy protection so it would only go upto 1080P. Directly connecting it to my 4K TV resolved that issue. This one comes with the standard, not the game or voice remote. The Good: Connect power, HDMI and either wires or wireless network and the box will guide you through the initial setup. The user interface is fairly intuitive and the box is responsive. Lots of free channels Support both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz WiFi. The latter providing more bandwidth It does a nice job supporting various local media players including eg Serviio and PLEX amongst others. The app store offers a PLEX client and the default media player support Serviio, Mediatomb and other media servers quite nicely. The Bad It requires creation of a Roku account and a payment method to be able to complete the setup. Even when using PayPal as the payment method, it wants full physical address info. Good thing is no address verification. Note that in order to truly cut the TV cord, you will need to add a number of the paid subscription channels to Roku. Something kinda downplayed in the promotional blurb. No USB port to allow for a external keyboard eg like the Logitech K400. FastForward and Reverse only show time point and not images such as eg WDTV.

Does a good job with an outdated background, but is inferior to the Amazon Fire Stick. This is a "certified refurbished" Roku Premiere+. It was packed well, in a plain cardboard box, but contained all the accessories that a new one comes with, including earbuds. What can I say? I have had 3 previous Rokus going back to the very first version a decade or so ago. I got a new one to replace the Roku 2XS because it was old and too slow. This version has a fast quad-core processor. Connected via Ethernet, it launches apps quickly. The old problems of device crashing I have not experienced with this model. The device is a little bigger and bulkier than the 2XS, but I got it because it, unlike cheaper Rokus, allows Ethernet connection, which is always superior to wi-fi, even in a really high-speed internet situation. The picture quality on my 1080p 46" Toshiba TV is very good, but I find the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2nd generation) to be sharper, more vivid, with higher quality definition than the Roku, at least with some apps. Also, the Fire TV Stick allows for Alexa voice-activated searching and launching, which is really convenient. Also the Roku background has really not changed or improved over the years. Still the same boring list, far inferior to Amazon's snazzy one. Also, Fire TV seems faster in loading. If I could own only one streaming device, it would be the Amazon, despite the larger number of (mostly junk) apps on Roku. And don't get me started on "Apple TV," overpriced and for Apple i-diehards only.

The best excuse yet for cutting the cord. If you're OK with sacrificing the shiny new box, this discounted refurb looks and performs like new--my 4th and best Roku. Its weight and speed are equal to the full-sized Apple TV box, and the picture and sound really "pop," even when used with a 1080p TV set instead of a 4K edition.. The Roku Premier Plus is one step down from the company's pricey Roku Ultra, which which would have cost $50 more for a remote with speech recognition and a digital out port for an external audio set-up.. Everything is included with this marked-down version, exactly as is the case with a brand new version. The included earphones are a reminder that you can use your own superior earphones for the purpose of muting the sound from the set and receiving it through the remote. A instruction manual is also included, sealed in a plastic wrap. Batteries, AC cord are also part of the deal. The only thing that's missing, in both the new and refurb models, is an HDMI cable for connecting the Roku to one of your set's inputs. Set-up was a breeze, fully automatic--completed on the first try without any reference to the manual.. My wife hates seeing me talking to Alexa, Siri, or any machine, so I don't miss the voice-recognition feature. But you can set it up to work with the Premiere Plus simply by downloading the free app to your smart-phone. After using the Premiere Plus for an hour, I could understand the increasing popularity of "cutting the cord." Some of the apps in the Roku offer news that's current, fast and complete.

Great devise but Hulu for Roku app needs a complete overhaul. We switched from an Apple TV and overall the Roku is a superior device with many more options and capabilities. Positives: Many apps with lots of streaming TV options that aren't available on Apple as well as a large number of custom channels. RF based remote (so no line of sight needed) which allows you to hide the box. Easier and more intuitive remote control. Good web support. Cons: Remote a bit cheap feeling and bulkier compared to Apple but still better to use and more responsive. The Hulu app is absolutely terrible compared the Hulu app on AppleTV. Since Hulu is such a big part of these devises and so popular this one app is the reason it's not getting 5 stars. This is probably Hulu's fault and not Roku but my thoughts are...What was the programmer thinking when designing this clunky and non intuitive app for Hulu? Why not just use the same interface as the one on Apple TV for consistency? The Hulu app on Apple TV isn't great compared to some of the other apps but the Roku version is just garbage. It's like they tried to make it too different and it's just really really difficult to use. It's hard to describe until you try for yourself and I'm considering cancelling my Hulu subscription or just using my Apple TV for Hulu....haven't decided yet.

Cons

If you are having problems here is why. This was posted on Reddit by JoFup and it works Here is the real reason Roku Premier Plus gives an HDCP 2.2 error. Roku Premier Plus does not support HDR. That's it. To fix the problem go into Roku Display Type and change it from Auto Detect to 4K at 60Hz and make sure it isn't either option with HDR in the name. This is the fix for the HDCP 2.2 error with Roku Premier Plus. However, when there is another Roku software update it will reset the Display Type to Auto Detect once again and you'll know this when you start getting this error again. How did I figure this out? I spent 2 hours on the phone with Roku support, we tested new 2.2 HDMI cables, reversed them, checked my TV, checked my receiver, checked absolutely everything. Then the support person suggested I change the Display Type to 4K at 60Hz. When I asked why not change it to 4KHDR at 60Hz he told me that the Roku Premier Plus wasn't HDR compliant. I told him that on the box it said 4K HDR ready. He kept correcting me saying that no it wasn't HDR and that my box didn't say HDR (I think he was in the Philippines) . So he had me change Display Type to 4KHDR at 60Hz and a few minutes into a show the screen on my TV went black and on another try gave me the HDCP 2.2 error purple screen. Then when I changed the Display Type to 4K at 60Hz with no HDR the show I previously streamed played seamlessly from then on. So the bottom line is that you need to keep the Roku Premier Plus Display Type on 4k at 60Hz to avoid the DHCP 2.2 error. The second thing you need to do is call Roku and tell them you want a replacement for your non-HDR Roku Premier Plus with a model that does support it. The third thing is to tell your retailer that Roku is lying about their product and that they should no longer carry it until they label their products truthfully. There should be an inquiry into Roku's deceptive marketing because they own the streaming market and have been deceiving customers for many years without facing any penalties. Please pass this on to whomever is having an issue and contact Best Buy, Costco and anyone else who is selling the Roku Premier Plus. Cheers.

Not a good upgrade from any other modern Roku -- even if you have a 4k TV. I have bought many Roku products over the years. In this case I was upgrading from a Roku 2. This product does not deliver the 4k (Ultra HD) image it is advertised to, except for some limited sites. I bought this to watch 3 Roku channels in 4k: ESPN, TennisTV and NFL Gamepass. The first two deliver a sparkling 4k picture on my Samsung smart TV's browser, but the browser is terrible and I can't, for example, leave it for a few minutes and return without starting over. So I bought a 4k Roku to fix that. 1. ESPN. The picture is obviously not 4k. It is no different from my Roku 2, and far, far inferior to the 4k picture on my browser. 2. TennisTV. The channel is broken on the Roku Premier+. It only shows the picture in the upper left corner, not the full screen. Not 4k, and thus not usable. Again, I get a beautiful UHD picture on my annoying browser (it uses an alternative DIVA plugin since the browser doesn't have Flash). This channel works perfectly on the Roku 2, but only in HD, not UHD. Thus the Premier+ is a big step backwards. 3. NFL Gamepass. That doesn't work in my browser (requires Flash). I don't know if it is produced in 4k. But the Premier+ is no different from the Roku 2. So for me, this is a step backward from the Roku 2 I already own. Since at least two of these sources are available in 4k, I don't understand why the Roku channels don't deliver them on the Premier+. As an upgrade from any other modern Roku, It will only be of use to those who want specific 4k channels--and most of the common channels (e.g. Netflix, Amazon, ...) are already built in to most 4k TVs. Hard to see the point of this except for some limited uses. If one doesn't already have a Roku, this is a fine choice. I bought (and returned) the refurb model and it was like new as far as I could tell.

1st one had defective power supply and already been opened, 2nd one seems ok so far. I have other Roku Premiere+ around the house and wanted to get another. The model performs well for all of the usual channels (ex. Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Plex, etc...). My rating would have been a 5 star had the seller (MallStop) not sent me a previously opened and returned product, that was not at all repackaged, and also included a defective power supply (I tested it with a known working one from another Roku of the same model at home). I understand the unit itself if Certified Refurbished, but I did not expect to receive an item that had already been returned and not rechecked. As always, Amazon's customer service was top notch and took care of the return and replacement process smoothly and very quickly. The first (defective item) was delivered Friday, contacted Amazon that night, had the replacement delivered to my door by Sunday mid-day and the new unit is in what appears to be unopened packaging. Also, just to note the Roku "Enhanced Remotes" are a bit misleading. This item did not include the enhanced remote as described on the Roku official website (which has the ability to control the TV power and has a power button at the top of the remote), but just the general "newer" Roku remote with headphone jack, nothing special. As for the Roku Premiere+, it as a product is very nice and works reliably well.

A Premiere Disappointment. I have used Roku products for several years now. The new Roku 2 from a few years ago was a rock solid, stable device that I have no intention of parting with. It's 1080p performance is superb. It had migrated out of my theater and into the living room. When the time came to go 4K I was dead set on either the Premier + or Ultra. This refurbished unit was a fantastic deal providing what I was looking for at a decreased cost. All of it was going so well until I actually hooked the thing up. All of the apps I've tried worked. Login was not a problem. But then, for a split-second now and again, the sound dropped. Consistently, yet randomly, the sound would go away and come back just as fast. Imagine if you will a louder movie with whiz bang sound effects. Bo(silence)om! Or dialogue "What a lovely set of"(silence)"you have." It is beyond aggravating. And absolutely unacceptable. I also thought, well maybe my HDMI cord isn't up to snuff. Bought a new one of those too. It changed nothing. But the story continues to get worse. Google is your friend and a wonderful thing. Now go put "Roku premiere plus audio dropout" into that handy little search bar. What does it tell you? THIS ISSUE GOES BACK FOR THE BETTER PART OF A YEAR NOW!!!!!! And you would never know it until you have the product. And it isn't just the Premier + that is affected. No, this bug is also on the Ultra. So I can't even "upgrade" to that unit as a replacement. My most likely box to replace this will be the Nvidia Shield Pro, which does everything the P+ does and then some. It does cost a bit more but it will probably be worth it.

Becareful to get what you are looking for. Some reviews wrong. Works but is not the same as the reviews told me. I bought this because the reviews said the remote would control the volume and power of my tv and the headphones. It does NOT control the power. There is not even a power button on the remote. There is no way to turn the roku off. Can you say Stupid? It does control the volume when using the head phones which is the main need I was shopping for so I will keep it i guess. I don t like the batteries and the roku always on. Just bad design. Customer service is annoying like all big companies and in the end was no help. I can purchase a different remote but Im not going to spend more nor do I have the money to. Otherwise I would return it and get the roku ultra which is the style the reviews were talking about.

Great device, poor offshore based support. I love the Premiere + but.... Since day 1, the remote would pair with the Roku, but the remote would stop working within about 10 - 15 minutes. The Android app on my phones would still work fine, while the Roku remote wouldn't do anything. Long story short, Roku has sent me 3 remotes. All of them do the exact same thing. Customer Service is obviously (from the accents) based in India, and it was very hard to understand "John" everytime I called.... Supposedly Roku is sending a new device this time. I just hope it works! Anyway, the Roku Premiere + is great with the android app. It connects to Netflix, Amazon, etc, much faster than my old connected DVD did, and I've never had a playback issue. The Roku is connected via 1GB hard wired connection. Just wish it worked with the remote.
