Pros & Cons

Pros

Great software held back by mediocre hardware. I got the 2022 Fire HD 8 to replace my 2013 Fire HDX 7. While the software on the new tablet is a huge upgrade, the hardware is rather lackluster (the decade-old HDX had an excellent display and processor, even by today's standards). The Fire HD 8 is still perfectly usable for most basic tasks as long as you put up with occasional stutters, and the 8" size is a sweet spot that is not too large for ebook reading but also not too small for watching videos. There are very few alternatives in the compact tablet market and pretty much none at this price point. Hardware: The display has a resolution of 1280x800, so it's not full HD (compared to 1920x1200 on the old HDX 7 as well as the current Fire HD 10). The lack of sharpness is most noticeable with smaller text, but otherwise the resolution is not really an issue when reading ebooks (I use a medium font size) or when watching videos. The stereo speakers are also pretty good for a tablet of this size, certainly good enough for watching videos. For music, I use wireless headphones paired via Bluetooth, but there is also a wired headphone jack for those who prefer that. The MediaTek processor is perhaps the biggest letdown on the hardware side, it barely gets the job done and chokes if you try to do anything fancy. Battery life is excellent. Since my last charge 3 days ago, I've used the tablet about an hour each day (mix of reading, music and videos) and I have just under 80% remaining. That is pretty much in line with the advertised battery life of 13 hours, and it loses very little charge on standby. Using a USB-C charger capable of fast charging (not the bundled one), it charges fully in under 2 hours. Software: Fire OS is a pleasure to use, especially if you're into the Amazon ecosystem. Obviously it comes preloaded with all the Amazon apps, but my favorite part of the UI is the Library tab on the home screen, which provides quick access to recently viewed content in each app (such as Kindle books or recently visited websites). It's basically an improved version of the carousel on my old HDX, and it's a really useful feature that other tablets could benefit from. Fire OS comes with the Amazon Appstore - it is technically possible to get access to the Google Play Store, but this is probably not the right tablet if you use a ton of apps. The Amazon Appstore does have apps for most subscription video services, however there is no official YouTube app (I just use the browser and it works fine). There is even a split-screen mode that lets you run two apps side-by-side, but the underpowered processor makes this unusable in practice. I even had the tablet lock up once when playing around with the split-screen feature. It's a shame because the software features really deserve a better processor. Overall, it's a decent tablet for the price and works fine for reading books, listening to music and watching videos. That "decent" could turn into "excellent" with a faster processor and a full HD (1080p) screen, and I would gladly pay a bit extra for that.

Best tablet I've ever had! Purchase it! I have always had other tablets and they always seemed so slow but this one is fast the screen size is perfect, and the colors are nice on it. I use it while I'm doing my makeup I'll put on a show and watch and listen or if I'm cooking or washing dishes, I'll put on a show it's so loud I can actually hear it with running water. It's my little portable tv haha. I read on the kindle app since I'm a passenger princess :) it's a great tablet I will get my kids one too. You won't regret this purchase!!

Buen producto.

So much quality for the price! I bought this tablet to take on a trip because I couldn't bring my laptop, and I wanted to be able to access the things I use online daily. It took a little getting used to operating it, but I am so pleased with it! It was even better than I'd hoped, and I was able to continue my usual online activities, plus get a few apps to play some games. And Alexa is great, I hadn't had that feature before. The tablet arrived the day after I ordered it and Amazon was able to link me up with my account and other devices ASAP. All in all, it turned out to be an awesome purchase!

Why changes? I've had quite a few Kindle fires and really like them. One thing I don't like about the new one is the shut off button has been moved to the complete left side, and turns off often because my finger gets near it when I'm holding it. I'll adjust, why move it? The last one the button was about an inch from the side. Much better location. Another new fault. When using the news app that comes with the Kindle the article you click on shows up on the internet page with the apps. Very annoying. It leaves when the items are deleted, but why was this added? So the reader can save it? I've only had this kindle a few days, and hopefully that's the end of the "improvements".

Love it. I am a long time fan of Kindle and replace mine every few years for optimum speed and usability. This one is about the extent of size I want since most of my reading happens in bed at night.

Cons

Decent for media consumption; buy it while it's on sale. TL;DR The Kindle Fire HD 8 is a serviceable tablet if you don’t intend to use it for much outside of consuming media, primarily from Amazon’s in-house apps. If you’re interested, I recommend that you wait until they’re on sale before making the purchase. Full Review: I bought my Kindle Fire HD 8 primarily for listening to music. I use Amazon Music (Unlimited subscriber) and it has a headphone jack. Not wanting to deal with the ads from the lockscreen, I paid to have them removed. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been playing around with the device to see what it’s capable of when it comes to media consumption. Here’s what I’ve come up with! I did manage to sideload Google Play and several apps. I’ll reflect on those experiences, though any issues I had from this will not count against the device, as Google Play and the apps from it are not officially supported. Interface and Build Quality You are pretty much stuck with their stock interface. You can’t remove ANY of the Amazon apps from the homescreen. However, you can hide them away in a folder. This cleaned things up, nicely. Toward the top of the screen, you have a static bar that shows your last 2 apps, as well as some recommended apps. They do manage to sneak a sponsored app in there from time to time. Seeing that I paid to get rid of ads, this annoyed me (though it really doesn’t impact my use.) I actually like typing on this more than I do my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite or my Samsung S22 phone, which surprised me. One would think they’d make sure their own apps are working on their own devices at least as well as the apps work on their competitors devices. The tablet itself feels kinda cheap, but not as cheap as I expected. The screen’s glass isn’t as smooth as my Samsung devices, but it’s quite functional. You can tell there’s not much power under the hood, as apps take a few seconds to load, and there’s sometimes interface lag when interacting with them. The onboard speakers suck, but I don’t use them. Headphones are the way to go… and since it has a headphone jack, I’m all set. The display is plenty for what I use it for. Support I’ve reached out to Amazon a few times to ask questions, or to get help. They’ve been incredibly responsive. The reps have always been courteous and informative. High marks here! Audio and Video Quality Music sounds great through my Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones, especially HD and Ultra HD from Amazon Music. Strangely, the app does not have an EQ option (I can adjust the EQ on my Windows PC and on my other Android devices.) It supports my Fosi Audio DS1 with no problems. This improves the sound a bit (mostly making things a bit louder.) It did not power up my Fosi Audio K5 Pro, however. Unfortunately, the Kindle Fire HD 8 did not support my Bluetooth Audio Technica ATH-SR50BT’s, which was a disappointment. On the flipside, I was able to sideload 4Stream and the Andover Songbird app to get it to stream HD audio to my Denon D-M41, which was a pleasant surprise. I took some time to watch some streaming video via Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube (sideloaded via Google Play.) Even though it’s not a true “HD” display, the screen is small enough to make it not matter so much. Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Rings probably benefited from this, as the movie didn’t age well in our HD world. The audio on it was also quite engaging through my headphones. Ash vs the Evil Dead on Netflix also streamed flawlessly, and looked great on the screen. YouTube videos play just fine as well, even though the app was sideloaded. As an eReader The Kindle Fire HD 8 works great as an eReader, as one would expect. Since I don’t plan to read much from it, I didn’t explore it much. Books loaded just fine, and you can interact with them as you’d expect (the Kindle is pretty robust for this, for those who’re interested.) Non-media Consumption I tried getting Discord to work on the Fire HD 8. While I was able to install it, the experience was pretty terrible. Browsing the internet with the Silk browser leaves some to be desired, and the mail/calendar apps are not something I’m interested in using. Again, I’m using this primarily for music, so I’m fine with this. However, if I needed to use it for anything productive, I’d be quite frustrated. Google Play Instructions on how to get Google Play installed are readily available online, and it’s easily doable within an hour’s time. I was able to install an EQ for my music, which works okay (I did have the app crash once.) The Gmail app loaded fairly well, as did Google Chrome. However, I can’t sync Chrome, as my email account was already used to activate the Kindle. There haven’t been any issues with YouTube. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 installed flawlessly and seem to work fine. However, Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, along with other Beamdog games did not install at all (these aren’t officially supported, but folks claim it works. Not for me!) Again, none of these experiences with Google Play will count for or against my overall rating for this device. I’m simply stating them in case anyone else is interested in tinkering. Ultimately, the Kindle Fire HD 8 is okay for the money (when on sale.) It works for my purposes, but I can tell it’d leave a lot to be desired if I wanted to use it for anything more. The fact that they still advertise apps on the home screen, even after you pay to remove ads is annoying (enough to knock my rating down a star.) I do suspect that the Kindle Fire devices are probably loss-leaders, and any ads they can cram in help generate income.

This can't be right! ISSUE #1. The charge cable won't stay in at the tablet end. Can't put it in so it stays and charges. Keeps falling out. ISSUE #2. The slot for the SIM card, card won't go in all the way. There is a very tiny latch where the SIM card goes in, at the top of the Kindle. I guess, when closed, it pushes the SIM card in to allow it to make contact. The only way mine works is if I manually hold that latch down, then I got it connected. But as soon as I let go of that little door the SIM card pops up and loses contact, becomes disconnected from Kindle. Its like its spring-loaded. As long as I hold down that door it's registering with my kindle. But when I let go of that door the SIM card pops back out of the slot. Strange setup, to say the least, even when it works. A door? Really? Are we trying to hold in a couple of excited horses? I'm suspecting that my kindle 8" (2022) was man-handled when a previous owner couldn't figure out how it worked, forced it and then repackaged and retuned it, and I'm the new owner. Very unhappy, because of issurs #1+ #2 as mentioned above, but also because I put the screen protector I purchased on before I did anything else. Right out of the box. These protectors, which I have put on all three of my older Kindles, are finicky to put on. Getting a pristine shield with no wrinkles, no fingerprint, no bubbles and no dust stuck under the shield, which then show up as black spots and bubbles forever is definitely a finicky job. My old 8" tablet has two of these darn black dots which are distracting, especially when you're reading. So yea, I put the shield on before I did anything elese. Practice makes perfect, experience teaches, sometimes. Put the shield on before you do anything, don't touch the screen for sure. So this time right out of box should gave me a perfect clean screen for under the shield. And I was right. Not a wrinkle, no bubbles, not a dust mote to be stuck there for ever. But now I did this for nothing! Since I am returning this 8", (exchanging it for a 'perfect' model) I'm losing one of the shields that I purchased and they ain't free, ya know! So, no, I'm not a happy camper! I have read every review written on this model (newest 8", 12th gen. 2022 model), and there is not one review that says that there have been problems with the charging cord not staying in, or/and the with SIM card (bought the one Amazon recommended) not wanting to stay in it's designated slot. So I have to assume that this is a singular issue with just this one tablet. So back it goes. I have three other Kindle, the very first 6" model, a 7" and an 8". I been using my 1st gen 6" in the kitchen to look up recipes, the 8" for reading and 7" for everything else. I'm going to move the older 8" to the kitchen, 2" bigger screen will help. Amazingly, everything else in this new Kindle was great. It was already charged so I checked out a few things that some people had problems with and had been mentioned in some of the reviews. The system is identical to my older 8". My books are there, and the one I am reading right now was exactly at the page where I left off on the old Kindle. Of course, after nine years using Kindle I already know my way around the operating systems. If you are new to the Kindle operating system, just click on Setting Information, a white wheel you find on the Home Screen. There you can get much of the answers and a good help system too. It's where you can change some of the settings to suit you, like size of type, email address, location, time Zone, and so much more, it's all there. its also where you are accessing your SIM card, if you're using one. Look under Storage. Do some exploring, you can always undo if you change your mind. Just take your time. I agree, an instructional pamphlet, included with your new Kindle, would really be helpful! I mean, this is a new product you just purchased. Amazon, are you listening? Everything is as I am used to from my older Kindles. Yes, the operating systems are a little different from model to model, or year to year issued and upgraded. Games I have downloaded on my old Kindle are downloading to this new Kindle, and all the apps and books I have downloaded, and accumulated over the 9 years I have owned and used Kindle, are right there and available from the cloud. You find them on the Library Screen. The scores and records of individual games are not transferred over from an older model thought, if I didn't use Facebook to sign in. The screen arrangements on the Home Screen looks identical, so does the Library Screen. I can arrange/combine all the pre-installed Kindle apps, as well as my games, into 'folders' and out of the way, (all similar game types together), just like I have on the older Kindles, makes it look less cluttered looking. Like I said it all look very familiar and makes switching between models a breeze. Now if I can just get the charger plug and the Sim socket/plug/door to work I be very happy. So tomorrow I will return this 'miss-handled' and 'man-handled' tablet for a true 'factory new' one. Then I shall see if it lives up to the older models. My 2012 first edition Kindle still works !! even though Amazon can no longer update its operating system.

Buggy and bad Micro SD slot - Updated - Not a good mobile tablet. I really liked the tablet but the Micro SD slot just didn't work. I even tried with an Amazon brand card. After that, I couldn't download videos anymore from Prime, got the DISK_IO_ERROR code. I was going to have tech support call me about it, but when I tried to put in my phone number it went in like this: (1234567890) - and of course it wouldn't accept that. I couldn't get it to go in right. I would have rather had it replaced, but that wasn't an option, only to return it. Maybe Amazon knows it's junk? Update: I increased my review to 3 stars for customer support. After my first review a customer support associate called me and arranged for a replacement to be shipped to me. So the rest of this review is regarding the replacement tablet. The SD card slot works, but it is a bit awkward if you have big fingers and short fingernails... Also, after about the same length of time as the first tablet, ( < month) I'm getting the same DISK_IO_ERROR, again. And I can't use the tablet to put in a phone number on the product return page... again. Same bug. I spend a lot of time on the road and don't always have a wifi connection, so I download videos from Prime when I do, but now that doesn't work, (again). This tablet is really made for people who always have a wifi connection; even the library etc. wants me to "reconnect to the Internet...". And i've had DRM license issues as well. So I'm hoping their support team can help me fix it or I guess I'm done with it. It's sad too because I really wanted to like this tablet, but it's not made for mobile use, no matter what they say, unless you always have wifi.

Amazon Fire 8H 12 Gen. Well the screen seems smaller than my other 6th Gen but it's just the casing is smaller. You can not widen a picture if watching a movie that shows a smaller picture, in other words it will not let you do full screen. The speakers are crap - worse than my other one. I used a bluetooth speaker with the other tablet and will use one with this one also. There seems to be too much bass - so the sound is a bit distorted on the bluetooth and I know it isn't my BT because it has an awesome output. I don't see any improvements for the better in this newer model. It works just as fast as my other one. Only reason I bought this one was the price and I dropped my other one in the water. If I could afford the more expensive I would have purchased that but I have my doubts those are any better. I don't know about the battery as yet because I've only had it one day, but it seems to take a long time to charge. One hour only gained 10% charge.

Unsatisfactory performance. In January we bought 2 Amazon Fire 8 tablets for ebooks and internet access, for use especially during our upcoming vacation. I spent a lot of time trying to pare my tablet to my earbuds. Contacted Customer Service who finally replaced the tablet. The second one worked great. My husband used his a lot more than I. He found its performance unreliable - inevitably it finally shut down for good in March/April - during our vacation. We didn’t enjoy only 2 months of ownership of his. I am going to reach out to Amazon and will update this review if possible. Update: Amazon called ME! I couldn’t be more impressed. With just a little effort, we got the tablet turned on and it’s now charging. (Still perplexed as to why we had an issue. Inconvenient for sure.) Hopefully there will be no more issues, but if so, I’ve been assured they are there to help! Again, very impressed and happy once more.

I'm not in lovr with it. I've lost count of the number of Kindles I have owned and, from the very beginning, I have loved every one -- until recently. I have so many, I soon learned to get them in different colors so I could tell them apart,, and I gave them distinctive names, also so that in my list of devices I could pinpoint each one in particular. So for this one I ordered the rose pink with cover to match. Every time I have gotten a new Kindle, the initial getting acquainted process went well, and I was soon happily perusing books and playing games and doing everything one does on a Kindle. Granted, I have had Rosie only a few days, but we are not getting along as well as I'd hoped. I got it because my two previous older ones have gotten a little slow and cantankerous, so to give them a break I though that a fresh one could take some of the burden off them for a while and I could use it while I figured out what might be done to improve the performance of the other two - battery life, in particular, which seems to leak out hours after obtaining a full charge. I got this new - upgraded - one hoping for bells and whisstles and to be wowed with its improvements. Well that is not happening. I'll give it time. Meanwhile, just so anyone won't think I am hoarding a stockpile of old Kindles, several of my past ones have been deregistered and either returned for credit or gifted to friends who otherwise wouldn't have one. I'm just so in love with the Kindle technology ... the first time I read an article in the 1970s about pending development of a hand-held electronic reader, which a photo showed as about the size and shape of a cigar box, and it was said to potentially hold as many as FIVE WHOLE BOOKS!!! I was so thrillled I vowed to have one asap - and it took 40 years to get my first e-reader from Amazon. As I said, I have been in love with every one - so far - but this one does not excite me yet. That's the thing about technology - it moves on. I'm just set in my ways and have to adjust.
