Decent IPL. Medium-high power (48W). Model AI-01. A few years ago, home IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy devices--previously primarily available to spas, were reduced in size and cost and became available for home use. Since then, a huge number of different models has become available at Amazon. The thing is, almost all these IPL devices offer the basic functionality of hair removal. Higher-end models offer such features as "ICE" active cooling and/or multiple filters for different effects. But if your focus is entirely on hair removal at the lowest price, to a large part your decision can be driven by price. Then, among these lower-priced units, it will come down to ergonomics and power. There are two basic designs for these IPL devices: Oblong or gun-shaped. I prefer the gun shape (like this one)--it's easier to hold and control. But the oblong is OK. Button design can also vary. And power can vary. Generally, these units range from 30-60W, with the higher power (presumably) translating into more powerful flashing. This model features a flash button on top that is easily pressed when the IPL device is in your hand (see photos). This is an additional button on top for power on/off and power level. Specifics of this IPL device: ** Has three modes: Hair removal (HR), skin rejuvenation (SC) and Acne (RA) ** 48W power supply (mid-level) ** NO ICE skin cooling functionality ** LCD screen shows focus area and power level (1-9) ** Gun shape, more convenient in the hand ** The power cord attaches to the end of the unit (see photos) ** No attachments to change the flash end shape ** Rated for 999,999 flashes, 9 power levels. Operation is pretty trivial: 1) Attach the power cord to the IPL device and plug it into the wall (the device is NOT battery operated--you must have it plugged in). 2) Turn on the device via the power button, which is on the side of the unit, next to the LCD screen 3) Choose the power level to use (you have nine levels, and you cycle through them by repeatedly pushing the power button 4) Place the front end of the device against the skin you are trying to treat and push the power button quickly. (You can also put the device in "auto" mode, where it flashes every time it is pushed against the skin. To put it into auto mode, press and hold the flash button for a couple of seconds). There is a few second refractory periods after flashing before you can flash again. The light is extremely powerful and could damage your eyes with continued direct exposure. Therefore, you should never look directly into the light and a cheap pair of folding protective eyeglasses are included in the box. The light is triggered by sensors in the front of the device. Using very slow-motion photography, I was able to capture a split-second (1/100th of a second) snapshot of the light (see photos). But the light duration is extremely short. You run the tool over the area where you want to remove hair and make sure you expose all the hair follicles in that region. You will not see any immediate results. The light signals your hair to stop growing, but it requires multiple treatments over several weeks before you will be expected to see results. Eventually, you should find a substantial reduction in the hair in the treated areas. In the box, you get the tool, a power cord, a pair of eye protection glasses, a cheap disposable razor, plus instructions. Unusually, this gun offers three modes: Hair removal (HR), Skin rejuvination (SC), Acne mode (RA).Typically, if an IPL device offers these altenate modes, it will come with additional filters that attach to the front of the gun to focus the wavelength of the light. The usefulness of these alternative modes (outside of HR) is subject to debate. But in any event, they are generally based on focusing the light into a more narrow range than that used by HR. I can't attest to the usefulness/viability here, although it's easy enough to turn these modes on (press the trigger and power buttons simultaneously to change the mode). Overall, this seems like a decent enough IPL device, and the additional modes is a plus (although I remain skeptical about how useful they really are).

2 weeks in. The growth has slowed. I have dark course facial hair. (Thank you genetics!) I'm using the product daily on 9. So far it has slowed growth. I will update more as time progresses.

Easy to use. The media could not be loaded. This is my first laser hair removal tool so I don't have others to compare it to but it is super easy to use. I found the directions kind of overwhelming but it's pretty self explanatory once you open it up. There is just a power button which turns it on and cycles through the levels and then the trigger button which flashes the laser on demand or it can be held down to activate auto mode where it just auto flashes after it resets. In the video, I have it in auto mode. I'm only two weeks in (1x per week) so too early to see results. I'll update this review after more sessions.

not sure about this device. I have been watching IPL at home treatments for a while, so I jumped at the chance to try one! This device is not for beginners like me though. Although I have been reading up on them for a while, this was my first actual try. The instructions are meager at best and leave a lot to be desired. They are also riddled with spelling errors that sometimes interfere with comprehension, so do not expect to find your questions answered in the brief brochure that comes with the device. I took some photos of the schedule so that you can see what the suggested usage length is. The device is packaged really nicely. You get the device itself, the cable to plug it in, some sunglasses to wear while using (I am not convinced these did much of anything - even while not looking at the device, I still saw flashes after using from bright light exposure), and a razor. I chose to use my own razor and tried it out on my legs. I definitely did not understand how to use it from the instructions that came with. From what I have researched, you will first need to shave the area. You will plug in the device, wear the sunglasses, and then hold the power button down for 2 seconds to turn it on. If you push the power button after this turn on, it will increase the level (they call this the gear) of the treatment. The recommendations from various places are to start with a 1 and then you can increase in future treatments. Then, you will push this device against the skin and press the button on the front handle. You can hold the button as you move the device along your skin and it will continue to flash about once a second, making it a little easier for larger areas. Also of note is that the device will go off when not pressed to the skin, even though it says it has a sensor that prevents this (I think this is what they mean), so it does not seem to be sensing properly, as it will go off when you push the button, even when not against skin. I found it to be painless but tough to figure out. I am not sure how effective it will be, but I have very light skin color with dark brown hair, so I am in the best audience for use. If I keep up with this, I'll come back to update with efficacy in the long term. However, I am not convinced that the sunglasses do much of anything and that the device is up to high manufacturing standards, so I have some mixed feelings. For people who are already experienced with these types of devices, this may work better!

Overheats easily. Product worked correctly when bought, now it overheats all the time. Very frustrating for this to happen. I have only used about 100K flashes and it came with 999,999K flashes. Total waste of money.

I got a dud. Did not even turn on. I got a dud. It did not even turn on. I returned it. Hence giving 1 in all categories.
