Pros & Cons

Pros

I have some helpful tips to get the most out of the Haakaa! I’m a first time mom. Needed to pump to build up a supply for my return to work. Time and again pumping fell to the bottom of my todo list because of all the prep and clean up work associated with an electric pump. Saw rave reviews about the Haakaa on the Instagram page @LegendairyMilk (highly recommend the page for breastfeeding support) and decided to try it out. I’ve been using it for about 3 months now. I WILL NEVER GO BACK! Super easy to use. The first time I used, I followed other reviewers suggestions and popped the flange back before applying suction. I had three ounces in less than 10 minutes! For a manual pump it’s impressive. Over time I felt more comfortable with the suction and was able to wash dishes, vacuum and fold laundry all while I was pumping, just watch out for knocking it too hard or when you hear/feel the initial air release. Its really nice that it’s a kind of like a “set it and forget it” device and doesn’t require u to use your hands. Perfect for busy mom. Its convenient enough to where I can bring it to grandmas and pump a little bit of fresh milk before I head off to my job. It’s also nice to take advantage of the letdown and catch milk from other breast while breastfeeding baby. Each time I pump my supply gets bigger and it seems that it fills up faster. I feel like I already need to upgrade to the bigger size. I’ve found some things through trial and error that I’d like to share: - Lean forward while applying the initial flange suction. - Suction is most efficient when the bulb is fully expanded. When flow slows, only squeeze a little bit until some air escapes and slowly release the pressure until it’s fully expanded. The draw from this pulls a lot more breast milk then when there is a dent in the bulb. - If possible, apply a warm compress to the breasts before pumping. It increases the output. - DO NOT ALWAYS TRUST THE CAP! It’s not the most secure. To make it more secure, put the grey cap on and pull back the pink tab that reveals the hole. Squeeze out a little air and while still applying pressure replace the pink tab. This uses the same suction and will provide a better hold. But again, it’s not the most secure. It will not hold up if dropped. WARNING: This pump is life changing and will increase your supply.

AWESOME product but there is a learning curve. WOW I wish I would have known about this sooner! This is so easy to use. Things I wish would have been included in the instructions: - There is a learning curve! You'll probably need to try it a few times before you get the hang of it. - Flip down the top when you're putting it on. You can watch YouTube videos on how to do this. - Squeeze in the middle (around the 3.5oz marker) to suction. If you squeeze lower, the suction will be stonger and might hurt. If you squeeze higher, the suction may not be strong enough to stay on. - Try to nurse in football hold or straight up and down (like you would in a carrier) to avoid baby knocking off the Haakka - Don't be worried if you don't get much the first time! It took a few days of using it every morning before I got more than a 0.5oz. Now that I have the hang of it, I LOVE it! I get 2.5 - 5oz during our morning feed. It is so much easier than washing all those pump parts and I'm building a huge freezer stash. I've been giving Haakkas as gifts to pregnant friends who have all reported back that they love it too!

Amazing for every breastfeeding mom but also was super handy as a Nicu mom!! Just buy it! Seriously amazing product! All the nurses in the Nicu were impressed and asking what this was! My haakaa expresses more per feeding than my Nicu baby does. It really helped me in the Nicu so nurses could take what they needed for ng tube feeding top offs to meet his required feeding amounts. Now that we are home it’s like my milk came in all over again and I’m trying not to pump like I had to in the Nicu. I could build quite a stash from my haakaa alone at this point! This picture was after not pumping through the night but still feeding my son. Second picture is my pumped amounts from the hospital grade pump in the Nicu vs what was caught in the haakaa. I seriously love this thing! Edited to add, now I am not pumping at all just using the haakaa on the side I’m not nursing on and I put them in my little storage bottles throughout the day. At the end of the day I combine them into storage bags in desired amounts to freeze. The last picture I’ve added is the amounts from the haakaa alone after 24 hours. It was approximately 20 ounces from the haakaa alone!!

Cons

Caused severe oversupply! As a new mom, this product came highly recommended so I was sure to buy one in preparation for breastfeeding. At first I was in awe of how much milk I was producing, as I could “catch“ 3 to 4 ounces in the breast I wasn’t feeding on during every feed. However, I quickly realized this is more than just a milk catcher. The suction that is required for it to stay on the breast actually draws out more milk and than would naturally drip out. Over time and after much research, I realized this had created a severe oversupply of milk for me and extreme digestive discomfort for my baby. This was the culprit that was contributing to my baby’s scream fits for hours every single night. I researched about breastmilk composition and learned a lot about the difference between foremilk and hindmilk, which is imbalanced when you have an over supply. The baby only gets the foremilk (heavily lactose based) and doesn’t get the fat from the hindmilk. This causes severe digestive discomfort (a baby’s tummy, like an adults, only has so much lactase to match the lactose) as well as the need for more frequent feeding since the fat is what creates the feeling of fullness. Thankfully, I was able to correct my oversupply with block feeding but had to stop using this. If I did, I had to just place it beneath my breast and could not use the suction feature. This resulted in equally as many knock over’s as before but with time, the milk I’d catch decreased significantly and I didn’t have painful letdowns anymore. If you use this product just beware! The more milk you draw out the more you produce. It’s a potentially disastrous And painful cycle for you and baby! Too much milk isn’t necessarily a good thing. I hope my experience can help someone else and prevent months of simply assuming you have an extra fussy baby.

Only collects Milk- it does NOT "pump" I'm really agitated that so many reviews said this product is not just a milk collector when that's all it is. I watched many videos and the reality is if you try to hand express it breaks the suction. Without suction it's no different than (hypothetically) hand expressing into a regular cup. I need to pump 20+ ounces a day so don't have the luxury of just letting milk collect. The attached picture is 30 minutes collecting...by that time I could've pumped 2 feedings with my Spectra. I don't get what is "life changing" about this or how on earth this is a substitute for an electric pump. Maybe I'm just missing something but back to my Spectra.

New version does have more suction, but feels like it is ripping off your skin!! So I had to buy a new Haakaa because the other one was used to help relieve a clog with epson salt, but it has essential oils and now continues to smell of the oils... my fault. So I got this new version and I hate it. No matter how I put it on it is extremely painful. It feels like it is ripping my skin off. The new ring around does help to keep it on your breast, but I believe is what causes the pain. It still does what it supposed to, but I hate using it and bought a different one (I went cheaper and got a naturebond one and love it even more!). So I would recommend getting one without the extra ring around it.
