Pros & Cons

Pros

Easy setup! This item was a breeze to set up. It replaced an older Blu-ray player that had suddenly died. Hopefully, it will last me a few years!

Capable unit, but a bit challenging to get it tweaked for best performance. I'm going to take part of the blame for the 4 star review personally. Up till now I've always had plug and play devices for discs. You hook it up and it works. Today you have to do quite a bit of manual configuration based on the kind of discs you are going to be playing. The instructions can get you there eventually, but you have to read them comprehensively if you are not familiar with all the disc formats and audio and video codecs (which I am still trying to learn). I bought this unit because it was highly rated as being one of the most up to date (future proof, if you will). I wanted to be able to view my old DVD's and CD's using this unit, as well as SACD's and the latest and Blu-ray and other audio/video format combinations. For movies it has worked well, though I've not been particularly impressed with the screen resolution. Again, I'm not even sure I've configured the unit correctly and I am constantly making setting changes to try and improve picture quality. The sound quality has been good with movies. As for CD's, that is the primary reason for my 4 star rating. I've yet to get the unit to successfully play a music CD. It recognizes the CD and even the tracks and the time length of the tracks, but no matter what settings I try, it plays them at about 4 times speed (on the progress bar) and emits no sound from them whatsoever. I may figure it out eventually, but again, I really expected more of a plug and play experience and thus far the instruction manual has not been helpful is resolving this problem for pure audio CD's. This is not a super high end looking or feeling unit, as it is the more typical glossy plastic finish. It feels fairly light weight and for it's price point that is to be expected. Overall the quality of the build seems sound. For someone who is perhaps not savvy on the latest and greatest technology, this might not be the ideal unit if you are looking for plug and play. Again, my own ignorance as to the latest technology is I'm sure a factor. I'm simply pointing out that I'm fairly adept at picking up what I need to know on the fly and this was a bit challenging for me.

First impressions. Had a Samsung Blu-ray player (only 3 yrs old) but wouldn’t play several new discs I bought. So, after extensive research, I settled on this Sony player. Too early to give a 5 star review, but it’s playing all the new stuff great.

Good but... This seems to be working well since we got it around a month ago, however... It didn't come with a HDMI cable like it said it would, and I was planning on using the 4k HDMI cable. =/

Focused. Focused and perfect

Time to watch my 4K movies! So I finally bought a 4K cable after reading reviews of different types and was looking for something that wasn’t too pricey or cheap and ended up finding this one. So far I have been amazed at the picture quality and audio when watching films like Batman v Superman Remastered Edition and Jurassic Park. Although I did noticed when I watched two other films there was second or two of when the screen went dark and came back immediately. I only experienced this when I was previewing a film and skipping ahead to see how it looked, but once I watched the films completely it was totally fine. I know you can do a lot more with this 4K player like stream apps and music but honestly I care for watching my 4K movies. If there’s one thing I wished this bundle came with is a 4K cable, it’s makes a huge difference compared to the regular hdmi cable it came with. Overall I’m satisfied with this product.

Cons

Review for Sony UBP-X700 (4K BD player), pros and cons. Review for Sony UBP-X700 (4K BD player) Video quality is excellent, as expected. Setup is easy. It streams quite well. Some cons, though: contrary to what is said in the specs, both in the online specs and in the user's manual, it will NOT play either TrueHD audio or E-AC3 if they are in mkv files. For all I know, they may or may not play them on commercial disks, but I would assume they tested those audio codecs on commercial disks. I was in a 2 hour chat with Sony's tech support trying to figure out why it won't play TrueHD (which is the only Dolby audio that is lossless), and they finally gave up, with the final word being "It's supposed to play TrueHD, but we don't guarantee it." Make what you will of that. I was about to just put up with it, and then I streamed an episode of The Flintstones with E-AC3 audio (extended Dolby, still lossy but with more digital info than plain Dolby), and it won't play that either, whether on disk or while streaming. That was a deal-breaker, as that is a very common audio codec. It will play DTS.HDMA audio tracks, and this player makes that sound great. That's close to lossless, but most UHD movies are going to use TrueHD going forward. Another issue, which may be common in other BD players, is that the USB port is 2.0. That would be OK, too, since 2.0 can easily feed fast enough to keep up with even UHD, except that it won't read a 3.0 thumb drive at all! Lack of compatibility may or may not be an issue for you. USB is supposed to be backward compatible, but not with this player. I sent it back, because if it won't play lossless audio in an mkv file, it just won't do. My older Samsung BD player has issues reading home-burned BluRay Dual Layer disks, but at least it will handle all major audio codecs on single layer disks. So bottom line: if you all you intend to do is play commercial disks, and stream standard definition video or music, this guy will serve you well. Beyond that, perhaps not so much.

Not complete :(. I’m only giving this a 3 star right now because I can’t use it at the moment. The box didn’t come with an HDMI chord. I had to order one just now through Amazon and will get it tomorrow, so I will try it out then. Visually it’s a good looking machine, and very light. I’m sure it will be fine once I get my HDMI chord, just bummed that it was left out of the box. On a side note, and this is just buyers bad luck, bad luck on my part as the buyer. When I purchased it a few days ago it was like $234 dollars or something like that. Today it’s showing $203 dollars. Sucks when sales happen after you purchase the device, but theme’s the breaks as they say.

Good player overall, but not for me. Doesn't play all format listed in specs. Pros: if you're a "casual" consumer that wants to have a player that is almost universal, this is a great choice. It playes everything listed in specs, except of a few things I listed below. Cons: I'm not a casual consumer, alas. I'm a big music fan, and movie fun. I have a large collection of SACD &, DVD-Audio disks, so I have good old OPPO player that can play it. And I also have LG Blu-ray 3D player that also play music from shared folders in my home network and my collection of 3D disks. Both players are quite old, so I wanted to replace both of them with this one. Or, at least by LG Blu-ray 3D player. Alas, this player didn't fit. 1) It doesn't play from shared folder, but it does play from Media Server. Fine, but... it plays mp3 ONLY. Nothing else! No other video or audio formats! Why? 2) Ok, apparently it can play all formats listed in specs from USB device. Great! Well, not so, because even from USB it doesn't play popular video AVI format! And it doesn't play some FLAC files as well. The player plays the rest of the formats very well, including Blu-ray 3D and SACD. So, my goal to replace my two old war horses with a brand new stallion didn't work... I returned it.

Does Not work out of the package. I had ordered the Sony UBP-X700 Blu-Ray Player several months ago for over $300 total. We were not in any hurry to hook it up since we were going to be buying a few more pieces to a complicated Home Theatre System in the next couple months (Projector, Projector screen, Theatre speakers and subwoofers, Theatre receiver, Fire Stick Cube, gaming system, computer) and were having professional installation on the whole home theatre system. We finally had all the components to our system ready to install. We called the professional home theatre installation professionals. Upon opening the box and installing the Blu-Ray player, the player did not play a Blu-Ray/DVD. I did turn on, but did not respond to the remote control, nor play any movies put into player. Batteries on remote were changed. The Blu-Ray Player was hooked up by professional people in two different ways with two different types of connections and no signal was seen on the projection screen. We even had a Logitech remote control to control each device of the system and the product model number code for the Sony Blu-Ray player was put into the universal remote. So we even tried this programmed universal remote on the Blu-Ray Player and that did not work either. The device would not play and the DVD would not spin in the device. This was the only device that would not work in our whole home theatre system which was installed. We are now out of over $300 for a piece of equipment that does not work from day 1 out of the box. I would like to have this replaced with one that works, despite the fact we are outside the window of return of only 30 days. Thanks Patrick Karl [email protected]

Now I understand why senior citizens still use VCRs. I just want to put in a disc and have the thing play said disc. Period. I don’t want to “interface” with a bunch of apps, and unintuitive set-up and menu options. Just play the damn disc, dammit.

No Display. If you just want to listen to music, given that it will read and play SACD's, there is no display on the unit to show you what track you are playing??? You would have to hook up a TV and turn it on and leave it on, every time you just want to listen to music. Also, there is no RCA audio output, suggesting that the unit does not have a DAC. A separate DAC has to be purchased to output audio via RCA to a stereo amplifier.
