Pros & Cons

Pros

Works just fine. I was looking for a replacement for my old Logitech remote, which is starting to fall apart. Despite some bad reviews, I ordered the Sofabaton X1 since I couldn't find any viable alternatives. The hub setup and firmware update went without a hitch. After using the remote for several weeks now, I am pleasantly surprised as it works (almost) flawlessly. It took me a while to get comfortable with all the configuration options, but now I can control my 8 devices, such as the Denon X6700 amplifier, Samsung UHD TV, and Himedia Media Player, and have several activities set up. Adding a few missing commands here and there by learning from the original remote or from the Logitech remote is easy enough. All my devices are controlled via IR mode, so I can't say anything about the performance with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi controlled devices and Voice Control. I live in Germany, so here is some location specific information: o Ordering and delivery: since the remote is only available from Amazon.com, you have to add about US$55 for shipping to Germany and import fees, which makes it even more expensive than it already is. I hope that Sofabaton will eventually offer its products internationally. Delivery from the US worked out fine with UPS, took about a week. + German environment: I use an old 220V Samsung cell phone charger as a power source for the hub, which works fine. The connection to my FritzBox 4040 router is stable. I can even use the 2.4G network for the hub and the 5G network with my Android phone running the app without any problems. Hardware: + The remote is lightweight and looks good, and the buttons feel solid. Hardware design is always a compromise and a matter of taste, e.g. touchscreen and illumination of all buttons vs. battery life or number of buttons vs. overall size. I quickly got used to the design and don't miss anything. More buttons can be confusing when you have to remember the purpose of all the buttons when using different devices and activities, so I prefer to use the screen for rarely used functions. o A motion controlled wake up function would be nice to have. + I placed the hub on one of the rear speakers and it works much more reliably than my old IR handheld remote, even in daylight. The delay time when pressing a button is very short. o The remote can be charged with any USB-C phone charger. However, if at some point the built-in battery wears out you will have the same problem as with most phones. Since you rarely need to charge the remote, the battery will hopefully last a long time. Software: + After getting familiar with the basics, setting up the buttons and menu options in the app is quick and more or less intuitive, though it takes quite a while if you have more than a few devices and need multiple activities, but I guess that's inevitable. However, if you don't enjoy playing around with technology, you would be better off buying a simple and much cheaper universal remote control, which of course cannot be configured as individually and offers less comfort when the job is done. + One can rename the commands of the devices so that similar commands of different devices can be distinguished in the activities. - Unfortunately, one cannot sort the entries in the activities menu, this should be added. - In the app, the next/FF and prev/rewind buttons are interchanged when configuring activities. I hope this will get fixed soon. o The search for devices in the setup should be improved (dropdown list of devices like in the list of brand names). - There is no way to save the configuration externally. If the hub should break, the whole configuration has to be done again manually. The device hasn't been on the market long and needs minor improvements to the software, but it works. It also took Logitech years to get everyone happy. Support seems to be good and the developers provide regular updates, so hopefully the small shortcomings will be fixed soon. But since everything I need already works and it's fun to use, 5 stars from me. I would buy the X1 again.

99.5% Harmony Remote Replacement. Soooo close to being a Harmony Remote replacement. The biggest issue is the lack of a number pad. So easily addressed with a redesign, maybe the X2??? Pros: Easily programmable via the app. IR blasters work great! Worth the setup time. Excellent library for code, at least for me! Cons: Lack of light up keys when lifting the remote. There is no way to slow down the “clicks” of the remote resulting in multiple “clicks” on devices. Lack of number keypad. Final thoughts: Adding a number pad and the ability to slow the “clicks” would make this a 100% Harmony remote replacement. It’s 99.5% the way there! I’m look forward to the X2 (or the successor to this remote with a number pad.). So close!

Excellent Customer Support. I was having a hard time adding one of my devices to the U1 remote. When I reached up to Sofa Baton support, they were very responsive. They were able to solve one of my issues right away. When the other device was still problematic, they offered to pay for me to try the X1. I did that, and found that I didn't like it as much as the U1. The code library is large and all of my devices were in it. I highly recommend this product in particular for the outstanding customer support.

Major updates have made this an awesome remote. I read the reviews here, and saw the star-count. But after doing a little research on other sites, I decided to go out on a limb and give it a shot. I’ve loved it. Setup was easy - they had the four devices I needed in their database and it all came together in a snap. Setting up activities required a bit of finesse, but I was able to get it all working perfectly in under an hour. I’m really happy with it - it works perfectly for us.

Needs more Ip-control options. It could be an excellent remote if they added more ip programmable options such as an a av processer or Samsung smart things And adds Google home or tuya accessories

BEST REMOTE YOU WILL EVER BUY. Having come from a history of having Harmony and SofaBaton U1, this is by far, the best remote. The X1 took a little to get dialed in and set for a couple activities. Experience with Harmony and the previous U1 helped, but could still be done by a first time SofaBaton owner with just a little household tech experience. Hub set up to my wifi was simple and connected without issue. Remote now turns on TV, AV system, and controls Fire TV from literally, anywhere in any room surround it. This was well worth the money. This remote was worth the wait!!!

Cons

Really good remote with a lot of potential to be GREAT. While this is a review of the SofaBaton X1 remote, I will be doing direct comparisons to my Harmony Elite remote, the Harmony Hub and Harmony software throughout this review, as the Harmony Elite has been the Gold Standard for remotes in my Home Theater and I know many of you watching this use a Harmony Elite or some other Harmony remote. Let’s start with the setup process The setup process isn’t horrible, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when compared to my Harmony Elite with the Harmony Hub. Product support can be a hit or miss at times, depending on what you are adding. For most of my components I had no issues but others, not so much. More on that in a bit. Setting up my Anthem MRX 720 receiver, there were no issues. It found the receiver and added it. Same thing for my Oppp BDP 203, Apple TV 4K, and my Nvidia Shield. When adding the Apple TV & the Shield, it recognized that both devices support bluetooth and asked if I wanted to control via RF or Bluetooth so I selected Bluetooth sense both of those devices are within a foot from the X1’s hub. Both devices displayed the SofaBaton under the Bluetooth settings and paired the device with no problems. However, the setup process was not as fluid when trying to add my XBOX Series X and my PS4. When trying to add my Series X or PS4 it found the company name but not the actual product. I find this to be EXTREMELY odd seeing as product support for the two biggest CONSOLE giants and arguably the two most recognizable consumer electronics in the WORLD dont have native support. I would think if nothing else, XBOX and Playstation consoles would be THE most compatible and widely available remote codes available. Seeing as probably almost every household has at least 1 of the 2, whether it be a Series X or S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, or PS3. And the fact that not one of those shows up in the product list is just absolutely baffling with the Exception of the PS3 which does show up in the product list which, makes it even more baffling that a console that is 2 generations behind is supported, but not current gen consoles. I have no qualms that when they do get the correct remote codes for Playstation & Xbox, that just like my other components, it will work just fine. But I’m not about to spend hours teaching the remote every single command. Teaching remote codes or fixing remote codes are fine for one or 2 buttons here and there, but not for an entire device. I also ran into a similar issue when trying to add my Epson 5040UB projector. For whatever reason it acts like it can’t find it. However there were multiple remote code options that I could choose from and test to see if it worked with my projector. And when I say multiple, I mean 62 to be exact. That is just way too many remote codes to have to cycle through and test each one. No one is gonna spend that amount of time trouble shooting remote codes. Again this just isnt an issue with my Harmony Elite. So I wasnt able to test functionality with my projector. I do want to give a shoutout to SofaBaton for some amazing customer service. When I tried to add my HD Fury Diva, the device was not found in the product list. I immediately emailed my contact at SofaBaton to let them know. A few minutes later I received an email asking me to provide the product and model number and that they would pass the information along to their technicians. I did. The following morning I woke up to another email from SofaBaton stating that the technicians had added the product and to kindly wait 24 hrs for the product to show up in the list. Wow. Now THAT’S how customer service should be done. Keep up the great work SofaBaton. So I waited a full 24 hrs and sure enough, I was able to add my Diva. The majority of my devices were added but others are still hit or miss. But once you get through the setup process, the remote worked FLAWLESSLY controlling my components. And that’s where this remote really shines. It’s functionality. If your product is supported, it just will work. The response time from hitting a button on the remote, to the signal being sent to the Hub & the hub sending out the codes via the ir blasters is super quick and snappy. Instantaneous. It never lagged or failed to execute a command. And if for some reason one of the buttons isnt mapped, remapping a button for a specific code is SUPER fast, simple and reliable. CREATING ACTIVITIES: Creating activities was pretty basic, but also straight forward and simple. However I did run into an issue with my HD Fury 4K Diva. The Diva has hdmi switching capabilities. Which is where I ran into issues. I have all my components connected to the Diva, and the Diva is connected to my receiver. When I tried to set up an activity with my Anthem MRX 720 receiver, my apple tv and my 4K Diva, it didnt give me the option on the Diva to select the input that my Apple TV was connected to. Like it should have done when it asked me what input needs to be selected for my receiver. In fact, it doesnt show any input options at all. Even after setup was complete, I could go into the settings and select the different inputs, but I dont think the remote codes for the inputs are entirely accurate because some worked while others didnt. And I cant teach the X1 remote codes because there is no remote. So not sure what’s going on there. Also you cant edit an activity, unless that activity you want to edit is active. I found this out the hard way because everytime I clicked on an activity to edit it, it would just activate the activity whether I wanted to or not. So please address that SofaBaton. REMOTE FINDER: Now one feature that I’m very glad to see but really has nothing to do with the actual of functionality of the remote, but is very important nonetheless is an audible remote finder. Thank you, thank you THANK YOU SofaBaton for including this feature. As much as I love my Harmony Elite, this is something that Harmony NEVER incorporated in their remotes and I have NO idea why. If you’ve ever misplaced your remote you know how incredibly infuriating it can be to try to locate it. Being able to open up an app, select remote find and track down your remote with a distinct audible sound should be mandatory and I’m glad to see that SofaBaton recognized the importance of this. Ergonomics: I wouldnt call this remote ergonomic, but that doesnt mean its not comfortable to use. I actually love how it feels in my hand. I prefer the texture of the X1 over my Harmony Elite. While the Elite is more contoured for finger placement, the elite does have more of a bulky feel to it and the heft of the elite’s weight is all at the bottom and not balanced at all. The X1 feels perfectly balanced and light but still feels premium. However what I don’t like is a few button placements. The back button at the top just feels very out of place and the functionality is a bit odd. The only way to exit out of an activity or a specific device is to hit the back button at the top. For activities, it’s proooobably not too big of a deal. But if you dont have any activities set up and are just controlling each device individually then having to constantly reach for the back button on the top of the remote just gets annoying. The back button should be closer to the rest of the buttons. I’m also not a huge fan of the scroller wheel. Having a scroller takes away from the premium feel of the remote and every time I use it, it makes me feel like I’m using some weird hybrid mouse/remote. I get the concept…Its probably much faster to scroll through numerous remote options than hitting a directional button one by one, but I just dont like using it and even more I dont like that the only way to select an activity or device and its options are by clicking down on the scroller. It just feels clunky and cumbersome and I’d much rather just have a touch screen like the Harmony Elite. There’s also no tactile confirmation that a button has been pressed. This is knit picking here but I like that my Harmony Elite gives me the option to turn on or off the tactile feedback when a button is pressed. Battery Life: Battery life seems to be good so far. It has a lithium ion battery with a claimed battery life of 3 months usage on a single charge. That remains to be seen as I havent had the remote nearly that long so we’ll see. I also would prefer a charging cradle but again this is more knit picking at this point…..with a cradle it’s stationary, you don’t move it, and it’s set it and forget it. I realize the convenience and versatility of a usb c cable for charging, you can plug it up almost anywhere, but cables can get lost and I’d at least prefer an option for both and let the user decide. Remote Code Learning: The X1 has superior remote code learning in my opinion compared to Logitech. I found that when I did have to teach the remote or fix a command, you point your remote of choice at the Hub and the hub saves the command. And then it just works. Whereas doing the same thing with the Harmony Hub, I found that at times it could take way longer with multiple attempts. On the Harmony you can teach the Hub codes by either pointing a remote at the Hub or pointing at a very tiny sensor on the back of the Elite. But I never really had a good experience with either of those on the Elite so the X1 gets more points in this area. SMART HUBS & VOICE COMMANDS: The X1 offers Google Home Assistant & Amazon Alexa Support with voice commands for those of you who are invested in those ecosystems. Unfortunately I wasnt able to test this feature as I dont use either of those. I have in the past, but if you’re regular on the channel then you know I’m a Homekit user. But let me know in the comments what your experience has been with either of those if you use that feature. Unfortunately there is no Homekit Support. Granted my Harmony Hub doesnt have native Homekit support but I use a plugin via Homebridge that allows me to turn on my activities via voice command. And there’s native support for Google and Alexa so why not Homekit?? I dont know if the X1 is even capable of supporting Homekit or not but hopefully it can be added in the future. SOFTWARE & APPS: Just like the Elite, the remote is setup entirely using the SofaBaton app. However Harmony does have desktop software that also allows you to configure and gives you far more customization of the remote more intimately than the app. But doing so means you have to plug the remote directly into the computer. As far as I know there is no such option for the X1. I think the X1’s software is on the right track and gets a lot of things right, but software support still needs some improvement. At times, the device compatibility can be hit or miss and the product database can be inaccurate and confusing with device manufacturers showing up, but no actual device for your specific product. There’s also no native iPad app support. Probably more knit picking with this one…You can download the iphone app on your ipad, but its at a much lower resolution, and doesnt take advantage of the entire screen, so obviously the app was only developed for the iphone. The Harmony software gives you a full screen, full resolution ipad app with the exact same functionality of the iphone app. So it would be nice to get a native ipad app for the X1. No Touchscreen: There is no touchscreen capabilities on the X1. This is both a blessing and a curse. If you’re like me then there’s been many times where you’ve accidentally hit the Elite’s touchscreen with the back of your hand or you just picked the remote up in your hand wrong and you end up accidentally hitting an activity when you didnt want to. Super annoying. On the other hand, it’s 2022 and pretty much everything has a touchscreen now. And to me the benefits of a touchscreen out weigh the negatives and I would much prefer having a touchscreen over a scroll wheel. Who is this for: Honestly, I think this remote is for anyone and everyone……If you’re just getting started on building your Home Theater or you’re just a casual viewer with multiple set top boxes, streaming devices, gaming consoles and blu ray players and you dont want to fiddle with multiple remotes, then the X1 remote is obviously for you. And if you missed out on all the Harmony remotes over the last few decades, then there is going to be a little bit of a learning curve setting up the remote and adding devices, especially if your device isnt supported, then you’ll probably have to do some extensive remote code learning, or you can reach out to SofaBaton to let them know which device you have that isnt supported……but once you get everything up and running the remote is an absolute pleasure to use, super snappy response time, it’s gonna feel comfortable in your hand, it has a good texture for grip and with a hub and multiple ir blasters, you shouldnt have any issues with functionality and controlling your devices in a rack or cabinet. And for those of you who are die hard Logitech Harmony fanboys like myself, looking for a viable longterm replacement for your Harmony Elite, Harmony’s flagship universal remote….Once you get over the clunky setup process and subpar software compared to Logitech, I think you’ll find that the X1 remote is a heavy weight contender with massive potential to equal or even surpass the Harmony Elite as the #1 Home Theater Universal remote. And for previous Harmony remote users, the setup process learning curve shouldnt be as harsh. Setup process needs some refinement, software needs to be improved, and product support needs well, more support… But don’t let that stop you from buying the X1. Just like any new company or new device, there’s gonna be bugs to work out and room for improvement. And SofaBaton seems to really be listening to their consumers about bugs and features that are either lacking or missing, which in my testing, is not a lot. They’ve got amazing customer service with a lightening fast response time adding products to their ever growing product list of 500,000+ devices. Aside from it’s flaws, it’s actually a really really good remote.

Decent remote that needs improvement in the device database to make it good. I got the remote and tried to setup an lg tv, Sony amp, Sony blu ray player and an Apple TV…all devices the s1 is supposed to support. I applied firmware update and added devices. The lg and Sony devices are supported with generic templates that do not support basic functions. The Apple TV support is non existent..it gave me a choice or 4 completely generic templates. This control is a complete waste of money and they should not advertise it has a database of devices. Update: I tried the remote again and found the Sony and lg devices in the database after trying several variations on their model numbers. The generic Apple TV support works ok, except that the home button does not work. Have decided to wait and see if SofaBaton fixes the Apple TV home button and remote learning. With some enhancements, the X1 can be as good as the Logitech harmony hub.

Could be good not quite ready for prime time. So this is an update. Let me start with customer service. They are great, they respond quickly and with good information. The remote seems to be pretty solid in build quality. Where this all suffers is software. It's not quite there. There are lots of things that sort of work or not quite. Programing is not intuitive, if you have smartphone savvy and know how electronics work you can get this going fairly good in a few hours. Then with several hours of tweeking you can get it pretty close to where you want it. Documentation provided is nearly useless. On line info is minimal as this is a new product. It does have massive potential.

Good, not Great. Overall the remote does what it says it will do. One major flaw is the lack of IR capability on the remote itself. I have an older Samsung TV that requires IR to turn the TV off and on. I have to open my cabinet to have the hub turn my TV off and on. Bummer. The other item that is frustrating is trying to get the remote set up. After a while, I was able to figure it out but it took some time and looking deep into the options menu to figure it out. I miss my Harmony Elite :(

Great idea, extremely poor execution. Let’s start with the remote itself. The build quality is fine but the button layout on the remote is weird and very hard to get used to. Right below the scroll ball, there is a back button. Anyone, literally anyone, will assume that back button is the method to return to the previous screen on the OLED screen. It is not… you must reach all the way to the top of the remote and press a tiny back button. This is not only uncomfortable but is a “what we’re they thinking” moment. There is also no dedicated power button. There is a button that says off at the top but nearly every remote refers to that as power. Either way it never worked so it really doesn’t matter. Then there is the required app. It is absolutely miserable to use. It loads constantly, nearly every action you take is met with a spinning blue circle for around 10s. If that sounds irritating… that’s one of the more minor issues. If you use the “learn from remote” method of pairing it to a device, it will forget what it learned randomly. In my case, I had it learn power on/off for my Sony TV (which it could not find in the database because their search feature doesn’t actually do anything) it worked for about 30s then it wouldn’t work again until I reprogrammed it using the original remote. Each time I did this the remote had the ability to turn the tv on and off for about 30s, after which it would stop working again. As I eluded to, the search tool is not actually a search. I typed in the exact model number for several devices and it would never take me to search results it starts “downloading the code base”. When I enter my model number as “this remote is garbage” as a test and hit search it reaches the exact same result as entering the exact model number… what exactly are you downloading? I suspect the root of all of this remotes issues is the horrible app. It struggles with the most basic of tasks and is not easy for the average user whatsoever. Overall, I love the idea but the execution is shameful. I cannot recommend that anyone buy this product as it is plagued by simple functional issues that should never have made it past even the most scant of quality assurance. I truly wonder if the creators of this remote even touched it before it shipped. I soent 2 days following every tutorial and help set step by step to just turn my TV on and off and it couldn’t reliably do something as simple as that. Truly disappointing, returned it this morning. 100% do not buy this product unless you love frustration.

Not good with SONOS. The remote “looks nice” but I spent a total of 5 hours configuring/programming, etc and still didn’t get it fully working. I’m even an AV/IT guy. I lost my Harmony companion and wanted a remote to control Sonos volume with Apple TV and Fire Stick. I really wanted to like this thing but it’s just awful. iy doesn’t allow you to increase or decrease volume (Sonos) except in large increments (too low or too loud there is no option for just a little bit). It also would never find my Philips Hue lights. Not even one which, BTW, I found out it will only pick up ONE light (not a room/scene) according to their tech service team. Overall just not a good remote. Buy a used Harmony. Stay clear of this one unless you have basic tv and maybe a cable box. (NOT GOOD FOR THE MORE ADVANCED AV SETUPS).
